

Robert Louis Probst passed away peacefully on Friday, January 21, 2011 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. Robert was born February 13, 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of William George Probst, Jr. and Lottie May Schmitt. Preceeded in death by both parents and brother, William George Probst, III, Louisville, KY and son-in-law, Peter Lawrence DeFord, Lansing, MI. Robert married Margaret Roman on December 29 1951 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Ann Arbor, MI. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, children, Deborah Sue DeFord, Lansing, MI; Laura Marie (Thomas) Lewellen, Highland, MI; Patricia Ann (William) Morgan, Ann Arbor, MI; Mary Charlotte (Gregory) Schwartz, Shelby Twp., MI; Robert Joseph Probst, Chelsea, MI; Thomas Gregory Probst, Gregory, MI; Anne Frances (Jacob) Haas, Chelsea, MI, 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, Hubert B. Probst (Brother), Cleveland, OH, Martha F. Shive (Sister), Louisville, KY. Robert attended Purcell High School, Cincinnati, OH; received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from The University of Notre Dame in 1949. Robert had a long and distinguished professional career working at Federal Mogul Corp. and Sybron Kerr Manufacturing. After retiring Robert developed the Metallurgical Program which he taught for several years at Eastern Michigan University. Robert was involved in many professional organizations, including The American Society for Metals (ASM), International Standards Committee for Dental Materials. He held seven U.S. Patents. Recipient of the E.W. Skinner Award, Dental Materials Group, American Dental Association (ADA); 50 Year Club, University of Notre Dame and Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Robert served his country as an enlisted Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps during WW II. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as well as St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Hospice. A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church 530 Elizabeth Street, Ann Arbor. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 26 from 12 noon – 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel.
