A native Annapolitan born in 1938, Alice grew up with one sister, Mary Ann, and a very large family of aunts, uncles and cousins. Her parents, Alice Stevens and Rudolf Adams Torovsky and grandparents provided her with a love of reading and music that lasted for a lifetime, but Alice brought her very own sense of adventure. Alice graduated from Annapolis High School and Washington College.
Alice's career as a military technical librarian gave her a chance to travel and meet people, but also a little cash that she invested in pursuing a private pilot's license. In retirement she traveled extensively with her husband and annually with her fellow librarians in the U. S. and around the globe, played tennis and pickleball, practiced water aerobics, volunteered around the area and made sure to meet friends for lunch. While volunteering at the Maryland State Archives, she met Mike Johnson and fell in love. When they married in 1999 Alice gained a ready-made family of five children and five grandchildren. Alice and Mike moved into a home and later a condo in Heritage Harbor and took advantage of its many activities. Alice played tennis and organized the tennis roster until she could no longer swing a racket. She joined the Heritage Harbor chorus, where she shone in many musicals and concerts. Her grandfather, Adolf Torovsky, was the leader of the Naval Academy Band, having immigrated after studying with Johann Strauss. When she and Mimi tracked down Torovsky cousins in Vienna, Austria, they set off with Mike to meet them and kept up a lifelong correspondence with Rolf, Milena, Hilde and Monika. Alice celebrated her 80th birthday with by skydiving during one of her trips to Rhode Island.
After Mike's passing in 2018, Alice moved into Ginger Cove. She participated regularly in luncheons with her Annapolis High School Class of 1956 classmates. She continued singing by joining the Ginger Cove chorus where she made many new and reunited with some old friends. In fact, her final trip to the hospital was a huge disappointment to Alice as it meant that she missed her final concert. Thank you to the chorus who dedicated their performance to her and to Bob who made sure she attended every rehearsal.
Alice was survived only briefly by her beloved sister, Mary Ann Crabbs "Mimi", who died 22 May 2025, one sister-in-law, Mary Louise Hutton (Bill), three of Mike's five children, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and her cat, TikiTu, graciously re-homed with her cousin, Joy. In addition to her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband, Mike Johnson. Special thanks to the Ginger Cove staff for their caring attention.
Visitation will be on Monday, 2 June at 2-4 pm and 6-8pm, with the funeral service on Wed, 4 June at 1 pm, both at John M. Taylor Funeral home, followed by interment at St Anne's Cedar Bluff Cemetery.
