Jack attended Massanutten Military Academy from the age of 6 to 15, transferring to the Jesuit Academy in Regina Saskatchewan. Jack completed his high school education at Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Jack married Nancy Pricilla Miller, the love of his life, on Christmas Eve, 1966. They shared their life on Miller Road in Annapolis surrounded by family and with their beloved pets.
Jack worked for Boise Cascade Land Development during the height of the development of Lake Anna, Bryce Mountain and Ocean Pines. After leaving the land development industry, he opened the Singer Sewing Machine store in Severna Park.
His insatiable curiosity for understanding how things work parlayed into his becoming Mr. Fix It upon retirement. His garage workshop was not only a place where family and friends would bring a variety of things that needed to be repaired, but was also a place where conversation about the meaning of life, the bittersweet nuances of politics, and the virtue of family took place, over an ice cold can of Rolling Rock.
He was an avid outdoorsman his entire life, enjoying early mornings hunting on the Eastern Shore and teaching the finesse of an accurate shot and respect for the sport to anyone who expressed an interest. When not hunting, his fishing rod was always close by and he spent time fishing off of his brother-in-law’s pier for white perch. Jack often turned the fruits of his labor into a delicious meal, shared by family and friends; sharing was one of his greatest joys.
Going from waders in the hunting blind to a dapper sport coat, suspenders, and pocket square, Jack was the ultimate fashionista, making sure he kept up with his always impeccably dressed wife.
Jack is survived by his wife, Nancy, for whom he had infinite love; brother-in-law George Miller, Jr. and wife Shirley; nephew George Miller III and wife Kara; two nieces, Pam Miller McNallen and husband Mike; Linda Miller Davis and husband Chuck; eight great nieces and nephews, Megan (Jeff) Zweiback; Kristin (Todd) Bunnell; Erin (Terry) Kohler; Eric (Rebecca) Miller; Bryer Davis, Michael (Brianna) McNallen; Brianne McNallen; Kaitlin Davis; eight great-great nieces and nephews; and sister Gladys Evangeline (Floyd-Dennis) Pollman. He is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Hayden Stamates Filchock and stepfather, Frank Filchock; father Carl W. Stamates; and sister-in-law Mary Joanne Stamates.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 10:30am at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the SPCA of Annapolis.
