Caroline Elizabeth Ruggieri was born on November 25, 1974, in Washington, DC to Nicholas L. Ruggieri and Anne Carol Ruggieri (née Kenenski). A beautiful free spirit with an open heart and a boundless curiosity about the world, Caroline passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 24, leaving behind a world that feels a little quieter—and a lot less interesting—without her.
Caroline’s love of people, cultures, and ideas shaped every chapter of her life. She attended Stone Ridge Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland, and went on to graduate from Georgetown University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Government. Armed with both intellect and enthusiasm, she launched a dynamic career in the life sciences sector, travelling widely and enjoying bringing people and cultures together.
Never one to follow a conventional path, Caroline later founded her own international consultancy practice, specialising in policy, lobbying, and regional development projects. With a deep interest in international affairs and an uncanny ability to energise any room—or any party—she combined sharp insight with warmth, humour, and a genuine gift for connection.
Caroline was truly one of a kind. She had a brilliant sense of humour, a quick tongue, and a fierce loyalty to those she loved. She was the friend who would show up at any hour, without hesitation, and the family member whose support could always be counted on. With great strength and compassion, she supported her partner, Peter, through his long-term medical treatment, and she offered unwavering care to many friends during their most difficult times.
Her passions were as vivid as her personality. A devoted cook with exacting standards—and a legendary ability to chop vegetables with surgeon-like precision—Caroline studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London. She travelled with her own knives, just to be sure nothing was left to chance. A meal at Caroline’s table was never just dinner; it would be an occasion filled with great food, laughter, conversation, and joy. She was also an avid reader and talented writer with an extensive literature collection, and enjoyed numerous artistic projects.
Caroline is survived by her father, Nicholas; her sister, Andrea; her nieces, Anna and Caitlin; and a wide circle of relatives and friends who were lucky enough to be part of her life. She is fondly remembered by her beloved pets, Biscuit, Zia, and Zuni. She is preceded in death by her partner Peter, and her mother, Anne.
Let us remember Caroline with gratitude for the past, enthusiasm for the present, and confidence in the future—with the same spirit, curiosity, and generosity that she brought so naturally to the world. A memorial viewing will be held at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, followed by a private service.
