I am still shaken up. He was having a fabulous life was given two
incredible gifts,  sobriety and Margaret.
Carr helped a lot of people.

Today, November 18, is Carr's sober anniversary. He would have had 39 years. He is missed by all of his brothers and sisters in the fellowship.

I just learned of Carr’s unlikely passing. I wanted to express my condolences to Maggie and his family. I knew Carr from the Atrium Fittness Center in the 1990s and beyond in Old Town. Carr was always larger than life and had a generous laugh and smile. May Carr’s memory live on with those who knew and loved  him.

I remember a dinner party a few years ago at Brian and Ashley's home when they lived on Rosemary Street.  They had a birthday dinner for Maggie.  At one point Carr stood up and delivered an extended toast to the guest of honor -- but not before first identifying each person seated there by name, and describing in a few clever moments what made each of them a unique and good friend.  I was impressed (and a little envious) at this ability to "hold forth".   But Carr was in his element; surrounded by friends, telling stories, and waxing poetic about the love of his life.

Carr’s magic in lighting up a conversation or a room, with his unmatched humor, gentleness and insights was treasure enough. His friendship and professional guidance true  gifts.  Compassionate, bone-tickling funny, always speaking to the heart of the matter with a sparkle in his eyes. You in every conversation as the love of his life.

I have had the honor of knowing Carr since the 1970's and his wife Maggie also. Carr was a special gentleman. He had great wisdom and was the most honest man I knew. I have had the most wonderful times with them both. He will be missed.

I first met Carr in the mid-'70's when his boss Phil Tierney and my boss Scott Humphrey worked together. He was a great guy to be around and we got to be good friends. We sailed together a lot, in the Bay, and down to Florida. We searched diligently for the "yellow dog" and he kept me out of trouble. He also provided that service to my son, Christopher. I gave him lots of relationship counseling in return! One of the great miracles of my life was his undying devotion to Maggie. She truly changed his life

Carr you are greatly missed. I look forward to sailing with you again, my friend.

I have known Uncle Carr since I was born. He was at my parents’ wedding and although not blood related, I called him Uncle Carr. He introduced me to sailing when I was about 4, tethering me to the boat in case I accidentally fell off. As others have said, his laugh was contagious and even if I didn’t know what was funny, I laughed.

Later in life, he was at my wedding and then was there for me during my divorce and a very difficult time. He introduced me to bands at Rams Head Tavern and I remember being at his and Maggie’s beautiful wedding. 

I will miss this amazing fixture in my life and know my dad will greatly miss one of his oldest and dearest friends. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see him or hear him laugh…or talk incessantly 😊….one more time.

We are SO sad and shocked to hear of Carr’s passing.  Dearest Maggie, our hearts and sympathies go out to you and your family.  Carr was an amazing soul and it is nearly impossible to think, for me personally, that I will never again hear him start the conversation with, “I am a huuuuuge Debi Smith fan,”— I am a musician and Carr and Maggie have been to my shows—and then extrapolate on that topic for two minutes before addressing others.  Carr helped us with a special needs trust for our son, and was always generous beyond measure.  And besides that, he had the same cell number as mine, with just a couple switched numerals, so we could always remember how to get in touch.  We will so miss you, Carr. - Debi and Michael

A dear friend of decades. Singular in presence. A good man who will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Carr. 

Carr was Wonderful!  He was our Fantastic Lawyer for over 20 years, guiding us through several legal issues with humor, grace and wise counsel.  We sadly learned of his passing today as we requested him to professionally assist us once again. 
He loved life, and his Maggie so much!  While we did not meet Maggie, he would always swell with pride, admiration and joy when he spoke of her.  And he spoke of her often.
Carr was always there for and with us conducting business with a story, a smile and welcoming confidence.  
Sir, we know Heaven's residents are laughing and enjoying you and your engaging stories as we always did here.  We miss you already.

Carr was a dear and devoted friend.   A life force if ever there was. We are still grappling with his absence from our lives.  Grateful for the times we spent with Carr and Maggie.

I will miss my friend Carr. Learning of his passing was a great shock. He was also my attorney and always steered me in the right direction. I will miss working with him too.  He was a sailor and an adventurer at heart. He loved nothing more than spending time sailing with Maggie in the Chesapeake, sailing to New England and sharing their adventures. Maggie is a great sailor. They were a perfect match, and they shared a life of love of travel and adventure. My sympathy to Maggie and Carr’s extended family.

Dear Maggie,
I was shocked, and deeply saddened, to learn of Carr's passing when I read the newspaper this morning. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. As you may know, we got our start together at the same law firm, where we quickly became good friends. Being native Virginians, growing up in small VA cities, attending college and law school in VA, specializing in the same areas of law, we had so much in common. When we would see each other at professional events as members of the estate planning community, we invariably would promise to get together socially with our spouses; I regret my part in failing to follow through on this promise because I so enjoyed the time that we spent together. Even though we didn't see each other often, I always felt a close friendship whenever we spoke. I will miss Carr terribly, and I will not forget him. May he spend eternity in "sailing heaven", always on course. If you feel like chatting, please feel free to reach out whenever you like.

Oh Maggie - we are so sorry to hear about Carr.  He was larger than life and will be dearly missed.  Sending you so much love - Ed & Donna

I used to smile to myself when Carr would launch into one of his great stories that he had already told me a dozen times. I would dearly love to hear those stories a dozen more times but I never will. I already miss Carr telling me every day how many knots and from what direction the wind was blowing on the Chesapeake Bay. I will cherish memories of the times we laughed together and the long conversations where we explored the depth of our characters. He was one of the most loyal friends I’ve ever had. He was brave and honest and empathetic. He was humble and imbued with that beautiful, authentic Southern gentility. And so funny. Those of us who knew him are fortunate. We will be telling Carr Stogner stories for years and years.

Carr and I met when I arrived at Boothe, Prichard and Dudley as a new associate in August, 1975.  He was a "senior associate" and took me under his wing, including buying many beers the night I found out a month later I had passed the Bar Exam.  He was a wonderful mentor to me,

We remained great friends for 45 years and stayed in touch after  he left the law firm. For over 20 years he was a member of The Robinson Family Football Pool as we bet on NFL games.  He was a regular for meals and games at my parent's house on Janney's Lane : they were crazy about him--and he reciprocated that warmth.

Carr was a terrific guy; always  happy and with a perpetual smile. For several years we both owned property in Big Sky, MT and he loved 
regaling anyone within earshot of his trips "out West."      

He will be sorely missed by many, many people.
