Mrs. Elizabeth "Liz" Alexopulos

Elizabeth Leanos “Liz” Alexopulos, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 8th, 2018 at the Sunrise Assisted living facility in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mrs. Alexopulos was born on September 4th, 1927 to James and Ioanna Leanos in Annapolis, Maryland. Elizabeth was a graduate of Annapolis Senior High School and a graduate of Towson State Teacher’s College. She taught in the Anne Arundel Public School system for over 30 years focusing on primary grade reading.

After WWII she met and on June 26th 1949 married James William “Bill” Alexopulos who at the time was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Together they operated and later owned Jim’s Corner Restaurant which was established in 1924 by Elizabeth’s father the late James Leanos. It was located on a section of the site now occupied by Park Place near Brown-Leanos Memorial Park. Jim’s Corner was in continuous operation for more than 75 years and was proclaimed an historic icon at its closing on April 24th, 1999 by the City of Annapolis. The restaurant, Elizabeth and Bill were beloved by generations of Annapolitans.

Mrs. Alexopulos is survived by her two children, Allen W. Alexopulos and his wife Janet Vitelozzi Alexopulos of Annapolis, Maryland and Jeffrey John Alexopulos and his wife Janet Ferrari of McKinney, Texas, and her sisters Virginia Leanos Elliott of Norfolk, Virginia and Helen Leanos Snyder of Annapolis, Maryland. She had four grandchildren: Nicholas Alexopulos, Zachary Alexopulos, Meghan Alexopulos and Christopher Alexopulos, and one great-granddaughter, Daphne Juniper Alexopulos. Elizabeth had four additional siblings: the late Fote Leanos, the late Gus Leanos, the late Speros Leanos and the late Pauline Griffiths.

During her retirement years Elizabeth served over 4000 volunteer hours at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. She also used her love of crocheting to create warm hats for newborn babies at the hospital.

Elizabeth was an active member of the Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox church in Annapolis where she was a founding member and past president of the Agia Anna Philoptochos Society. In 2007 she fulfilled her lifelong dream of establishing the Agia Anna Philoptochos Scholarship Fund for college-bound high school seniors.

For many years Elizabeth was an active member of the Annapolis “Mall” Walkers group.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday August 12th, 2018 at John M. Taylor Funeral Home at 147 Duke of Gloucester Street in Annapolis, Maryland 21401. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday August 13th at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church located at 2747 Riva Road, Annapolis, Maryland 21401, with internment to follow at St. Demetrios Cemetery in Annapolis.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Agia Anna Philoptochos Scholarship Fund at 2747 Riva Road, Annapolis, Maryland and/or the Auxiliary of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, 2001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis Maryland 21401.
