With great sadness we announce the passing of Geraldine Elizabeth Maggio. She died peacefully on May 16, 2026, while in the compassionate care of Hospice of the Chesapeake. Gerry was blessed to be surrounded by many loved ones in the days before joining her husband in Heaven. With the encouragement of her beloved choir director, Gerry is now among the angels, teaching them how to sing.
Gerry was born in Long Beach, California but spent the majority of her life in Annapolis, Mayland. Some of her fondest childhood memories were formed while her Navy family was stationed in Puerto Rico, and she often spoke fondly of her life on Randall Court.
Gerry was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry, and by her parents, Carl Sr. and Helen Steiner. She is survived by her siblings, Patricia (Steiner) Hunt and her twin brother, Carl Steiner Jr.; her children, Mark Maggio, Valerie (Maggio) Colvin (Tony), and Ross Maggio; her grandchildren, Kaileigh (Maggio) Lewis (Cody), Ian Maggio, Nicole Keller, Andrea (Houston)Simms, and Natasha Maggio; and her great-grandchildren, Raelyn, Renlee, and Dominic. She also leaves Laura Maggio, who was always present in her life, along with countless loving relatives and friends. Gerry was many things to many people: a beloved wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, loving sister and aunt, and a source of comfort to anyone fortunate enough to know her.
Gerry graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1959. During her time there, she participated in many clubs and held leadership roles, including Secretary-Treasurer and Choir President in her senior year. Her love of music began early through the school’s glee club, operetta, and choir. Following high school, she briefly sang in the chorus of the Baltimore Opera.
As a member of St. Mary’s Church choir from the age of 14 to 78, Gerry was a standout soprano and frequent soloist. She sang at countless weddings and funerals over the years, often for multiple generations of the same family. Her angelic voice opened Midnight Mass each Christmas Eve with her rendition of “O Holy Night”, bringing many in the congregation to tears. In recognition of her years of service in the St. Mary’s church choir, Gerry received the first ever Saint Cecilia Medal, patron saint of musicians, poets, and singers.
Gerry enjoyed: attending concerts with her husband Harry and sister Patricia, vacationing with Harry (including a life-changing experience in Vatican City), singing with Encore Creativity, and promoting the belief that “cleanliness is next to godliness” with her trusted Electrolux vacuum. Most of all her life revolved around family; whether it be gathering around a holiday table, cheering from the sidelines at countless sporting events, or simply dozing off on the couch with her beloved husband by her side.
Gerry was generous with her time. She was a devoted Mod Squad Majorette Mom for six years, braving hot summer days with the group at parades and field days. She was the loudest voice on the sidelines, cheering the group on to many grand champion awards. For more than 30 years, she was a warm smile and voice welcoming patients at West Annapolis Family Dentistry. Gerry exemplified the motto, “If you are not ten minutes early, you are late”; she rarely missed a day. If it meant trekking through a foot of snow to ensure every patient was contacted, she gladly did so.
Above all else, our mother embodied her role as caregiver to her family. She gave without reserve and loved without condition. Not only did she literally save the lives of two of her children, her love was the emotional salvation of us all.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
