

Kenneth Robert Binnix, 70, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away after a long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. A loving husband and father, he is survived by Carol, his wife of 50 years, and three sons: Michael Binnix of Severna Park (his wife Tivy, and their children Taylor, Justin, Morgan, Jessica, Zachary, and Erik), Justin Binnix of Arnold (his wife Stacie, and their children Hayden, Noah, and Ethan), and Todd Binnix of Lutherville (his wife Heather and their child Katlyn). Ken is also survived by two siblings, Barbara Waas of Bethesda, and Raymond Binnix of Chantilly, VA. A consummate family man, Ken was surrounded by his entire family (including all ten grandchildren) in the hours prior to his passing. Ken was born on October 23, 1944, in Washington, DC, and raised in Maryland. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1969 as a crew member of anti-submarine patrol aircraft from East Coast air stations. A distinguished business leader in the waste management and environmental sciences field for over 40 years, Ken served on numerous professional boards at the local, regional and national levels. Ken was an active and selfless volunteer member of the community, starting with twelve years of service with the Boy Scouts of America. Ken was also a founding member of the Oyster Recovery Partnership and served as president of Chesapeake Appreciation Days which actively supported the historic heritage of the Chesapeake Bay’s watermen. Ken was a Coast Guard certified Captain who served as president of the local Captain’s Association. Active in his Annapolis communities of Admiral Heights (1976 – 1986) and Hunt Meadow (1987 to present), Ken also served as the Captain’s Quarters Condo Association President in his second home in Lewes, Delaware (since 2006). Additionally, Ken was the original Santa for the Annapolis Santa Run--the holiday charity operated by the Annapolis Fire and Police departments which collects and delivers gifts to the less fortunate children of the community. On December 23, 2014, Ken was honored as the “Official Santa Claus of Anne Arundel County”, receiving an Executive Proclamation issued by County Executive Steven Schuh. Friends and family may call at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Inc. 147 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401 for a memorial visitation on Friday January 9, 2015 from 5 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday January 10, 2015 at 9 Am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 109 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Ken is a wonderful example of a life well-lived, and will be sorely missed by many.
