Lonnie Okia Overton, 87, of Arnold, MD succumbed to injuries sustained from a fall on New Year’s Eve, on January 10, 2022, at twelve forty-five in the afternoon. He was born in Terre Haute, IN on October 8, 1934 to Opal Leona Gibson Overton & William Okia Overton.
Lon lived a life full of architecture, and would not have had it any other way. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Architecture. Traveling his way east to Annapolis, MD working for a design-build firm that built banks, he established an architecture design-build firm of his own that started out as Lon Overton & Associates, Inc. and eventually ended as Overton Design Group, LLC. During his life Lon established architecture and interior design curricula at Anne Arundel Community College and Maryland Institute, College of Art where he chaired and ran a department of his own design for a decade. His unique way of teaching made him beloved by many of his students who became extended members of his family. Teaching architecture was just as important to him as practicing it. He didn’t just want to create his own designs, but wanted to teach others how collaborating through design can create not just buildings, but art you live in.
His sons Craig Spencer & Scott Allen Overton passed before he did. He is survived by his wife Margaret E.F. Conlyn Overton, son Stuart Kyle Overton, daughter Alexandra Overton Gallamore, and grandson Walker Okia Gallamore.
A memorial visitation will be held at John M. Taylor Funeral Home 147 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, Maryland 21401 on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 1 to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers please donate to art education in the grade schools of your area.
