

Mr. McCarthy attended Edgewater Elementary and later graduated from Annapolis Sr. High in 1968.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1968 until 1972, reaching the rank of sergeant: he was weapons specialist and a marksmenship instructor. After his discharge, Mr. McCarthy became a professional firefighter for both the Naval Academy and Andrews Air Force Base, and was also a member of the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 on.
Mr. McCarthy retired from the government with over 40 years of service. He is survived by three children: Jeanne T. Sherbert, Michael P. McCarthy and Kelly K. McCarthy of South Carolina; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving Mr. McCarthy are Martin D. McCarthy, Jr., and Patricia Soehnlein of Edgewater, and Patrick and Heather Flaharty. He was the son of the late Martin D. McCarthy, Sr. and Bertha M. McCarthy, both of Edgewater.
Mr. McCarthy’s interest included coin collecting, photography, bingo and dining out.
Burial will be at the Crownsville Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
