

Michael Francis Miron, 71, a 40 year resident of the Annapolis-Eastport area, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016 in his Eastport home. He was born January 15, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA and received a BS in Economics from St. Leo’s University, Tampa FL and later his MS in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Mike was the owner of Eastport Shell until 1998 during which time the Shell station was the center of activity in Eastport. He served as the president of the Eastport Business Association and was named Admiral of Eastport by the Eastport Civic Association. In 1998, he helped organize the Maritime Republic of Eastport and was one of the original signers of the Unanimous Declaration of Independence of the Maritime Republic of Eastport, where he served as the Minister of Transportation. Mike served on the Annapolis Planning Commission from 1986-1992, where he was Chair from 1987-89. Under Mike’s stewardship, the Planning Commission and the City Council adopted the Inner West Street area MX zoning; the Maritime District; and the new Central West Street Area Neighborhood Conservation District. Additionally, Parks and Paths for People was adopted, and the site Design Plan Review process and Critical Area and Tree Preservation regulations were formulated. Mike was the Director of Economic Development for the City of Annapolis from 2001-2010, during which time Park Place and 1901 West Street were developed. He also spearheaded the development of the Arts and Entertainment District along West Street. Mike was instrumental in the founding of the Annapolis Maritime Museum. His development of the first business plan helped transition the Eastport Historical Committee into the Annapolis Maritime Museum. He served as the Business Manager for the Museum in 2001. Mike spent the past three years building the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s digital archives of more than 150 oral histories, capturing the stories and voices of the people, watermen, and boat builders. He researched and collected archives about the many boatyards in Annapolis such as Trumpy, Owens, Annapolis Yacht Yard and more. He was also instrumental in planning the 2014 and 2015 Winter Lecture Series. Mike was an accomplished Chef. His joy was to concoct sumptuous dinners for guests; prepare canned tomatoes and make his famous pickles, all of which he gave to friends. He traveled widely, including living in France for a year with his wife, Shelley Mike is survived by his wife, Shelley Row; daughter, Linnea Miron of Venice, CA; brothers, David A. Miron of Ponte Verde, FL and Jerome Patrick Miron of Sun City, FL. A memorial service will be held 4:00pm, Sunday, September 11, 2016 at the Annapolis Maritime Museum.
