Richard Vincent Caruso

Richard Caruso was born on November 21, 1934 in New York City and was raised in Maywood, N.J. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Columbia University, and then served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. He later graduated from the Harvard Business School.

Richard was the Executive Vice President of The George Hyman Construction Company and of The Clark Construction Group, the nation’s 2nd largest general building contractor. In 1977 he founded OMNI Construction Company and was the Chairman and CEO until his retirement in 1990 at the age of 55. Under his leadership OMNI became the largest local general building contractor in the DC/Baltimore area.

Richard served as a Director of Suburban Bank, Clark Enterprises Inc., and OMNI Construction Company. He was appointed as chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Trust by Governor William Donald Schaefer and was responsible for raising major funding to help preserve the bay. He also served on the University of Maryland Boards for the School of Engineering and the School of Business and Management. He raised one million dollars to support the School of Engineering’s new Construction Engineering program, which he also helped to found. He was also a member of numerous Construction Industry Associations.

He had been a member of the Board of Trustees at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts where he studied painting for the past 20 years. He was an active member of the Maryland Portrait Society, The Portrait Society of America, and the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association.

Richard attended St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis. He was an avid rower, runner, sailor, golfer, cyclist, and ballroom dancer. Richard’s passion for life and his family will be missed by his four children, Gregory (Robbin) Caruso, Jeffrey (Lianne) Caruso, Beth Caruso, and Catherine (Mark) Somerville. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 25th at 9am at St. Mary’s Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis Maryland. All are welcome to come and celebrate Richard’s great life!
