

Bob was born on June 6, 1930, in Topeka, KS to his late parents, James and Ada Carruthers.
Bob graduated from Beaumont Union High School in Beaumont, CA, attended the University Hawaii, and completed many courses with the U.S. Marine Corps.
After serving an enlistment in the U.S. Coast Guard, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He attained the grade of Staff Sergeant prior to being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Following his commission, he served in the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, the 1st and 3rd Marine Air Wings, at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, and various Posts and Stations. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal with Combat “V” for service in Vietnam. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel, he worked for various Defense contractors. For 15 years, he enjoyed working in a part-time position with the Annapolis Harbormaster. He was a member of the New Providence Club, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the Anne Arundel Fish and Game Association.
As a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Crownsville, MD, he served two terms as Junior Warden and two terms as a member of the Vestry.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Mary Wright Carruthers. They enjoyed traveling extensively during their marriage and he greatly enjoyed sailing with her and their friends for many years on the Chesapeake Bay.
Bob is also survived by three children: Michael Carruthers of Annapolis, Karen Carruthers Rider of Cos Cob, CT and Christopher Carruthers of Hackettstown, NJ and four grandchildren. A third son, James Kevin Carruthers, predeceased him in 2007.
A celebration of life will be held on April 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 1505 Crownsville Road, Crownsville, MD 21032.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
