Susan M. Schiavone (76) passed away in her home on May 20, 2022. She was born on March 25, 1946 in Washington, DC to the late Marie (Thomas nee Mangum) Munsterteiger and Richard Thomas. Sue was a generous and supportive wife, mom and grandma who was kind to everyone she met. She was loved by many and will be missed by those lives she touched.
Sue attended Holy Cross High School in Kensington, Maryland, where she played Varsity basketball. It was during senior year she began dating the love of her life, John. After high school, Sue pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Education at Town State University and began teaching soon after graduation. She and John were married on August 10, 1968 and moved to College Park, Maryland. They moved once to Bowie, Maryland, only to settle into their permanent residence in Severna Park, where they raised their two children and have lived in for over 44 years.
A dedicated and caring mother, Sue took time off from teaching to raise her children. During this time, she earned her Masters from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland. From then on, she continued to teach for over 30 years, retiring with the Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Severna Park Middle School. She was an English Language Arts teacher for middle grades and one of her favorite parts of teaching was running into ex-students and hearing the success stories and telling her husband, “I knew they’d do well.” After retiring, Sue continued working in the teaching realm as a mentor teacher and adjunct professor for 5 years through Salisbury State University, passing along her experience and wisdom to students wishing to become a great teacher, just like her.
Sue was an active member of Our Lady of the Fields parish in Millersville, Maryland. A devout Catholic, she attended Sunday mass each week and was a member of the Church Choir for over 10 years. During the pandemic, she still tuned into Youtube to watch Sunday mass live streamed and rarely missed a week.
Sue loved her family, especially her four grandchildren. She enjoyed spending every minute with J.T., Allison, J.J. and Mason. She loved baking with them, going shopping, going to Hershey Park, playing board games and was their biggest fan in anything they had going on in their lives. She was so proud of each and every one of them.
Sue’s hobbies included reading books on her Kindle, solving puzzles (crossword puzzles, Wordscapes, Scrabble, you name it), crafting, admiring her beautiful flowers and eating dinner out with her many friends.
Sue and John both loved cruising, especially to Bermuda. She also looked forward to the yearly family vacations to Ocean City, Maryland. The beach was one of Sue’s favorite places to be.
Sue is preceded in death by her mother Marie (Thomas nee Mangum) Munsterteiger, her father Richard Thomas and her step-father Richard Munsterteiger. Sue is survived by her loving husband, John Schiavone of Severna Park, Maryland; her son, Kevin Schiavone (wife Christy) of Severna Park, Maryland and her daughter Carrie Stanyard (husband Jim) of Boardman, Ohio; and her adoring grandchildren J.T. Schiavone, Allison Schiavone, J.J. Stanyard and Mason Stanyard; as well as her brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Sue’s life on Tuesday May 31, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 10:30AM at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue South, Millersville, MD 21108. A reception will be held in the church hall after the service. A private cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a favorite charity in Susan’s name.
