Thomas S. Canter, known to everyone he knew as Tom, passed away at the University of Maryland Medical System - Shore Health, in Easton, after succumbing to respiratory failure as a result of a recent injury.
Tom was born in Youngstown, OH as the oldest child of Stephen (Pete) Cantor and Jane Bohenek Cantor, and had two younger brothers, Edward and James Cantor and a younger sister, Geraldine Cantor Childers. After serving honorably in the U.S. Marines, he returned to OH and was married to the former Norma DeMolli on May 18, 1958. They remained married until her death in 1997. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son Steven, both of his parents, all three of his younger siblings and their spouses, as well as by his nephews, Ed Cantor, Jr. and James Childers.
He is survived by his daughters, Jane Canter of Chester and Felicia Canter of Millersville, as well as a niece, AnnaMarie Roth and her family, of Canfield, OH, a nephew, John Childers and his family, of Struthers, OH and another niece, Karen Cantor Butka and her family, of Austintown, OH and Bowling Green, KY, as well as by many friends, former neighbors and golfing buddies in Sun City Center, FL, where he lived from March, 2003 to March, 2022, when he returned to Maryland.
After a long financial career, first in insurance and then in banking, he retired in 1992 and lived in Annapolis with Norma, caring for her during her final illness. After her death, he moved to Sun City Center, FL, where he enjoyed learning to use email in the clubhouse computer lab, surfing the web there and at home on his laptop computer and playing golf on the various courses in his Sun City Center neighborhood, Kings Point, often sending family members photos of the alligators in the water hazards along those courses. He was quick with a joke or a story and also, in his later years, was the kind of person who did what he wanted, when he wanted to do it and how he wanted to do it.
He will be fondly and sadly missed by his family and friends. Services will be private; he will be interred with his wife, Norma, and next to his son, Steve, at the Hillcrest Cemetery on Forest Drive in Annapolis.
