He was born on the family farm in Elizabeth, West Virginia on November 6th, 1940 to the late James Willie and Frank Iloe Morehead. After graduating from Wirt County High School, he went to Glenville State College and earned his teaching degree. He moved to Annapolis in 1962 to start his teaching career at Annapolis Junior High School where he taught 7th grade science for 30 years. He was an active member of Heritage Baptist Church and also worked as the facility manager for 40 plus years until his retirement in 2018.
During his time at Heritage, he loved to share his love of snakes, spiders, and other critters with the little ones that attended Heritage Learning Center.
He loved spending time outdoors, gardening, feeding the squirrels and birds, and taking long walks. He was known for telling jokes and for pulling pranks when least expected, especially with his children and grandchildren. Every summer for more than 40 years, he would spend a week with his family, camping at Cherrystone Campground where he enjoyed netting crabs by wading out into the water at low tide, playing bingo, and just relaxing. He loved to return to the family farm every year in August for the Morehead family reunion. He loved catching up and talking with his siblings and his many nieces and nephews. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them about wildlife and critters.
Clair was married to his beloved Sally for 56 years until her death in 2021. He is survived by his three children, John W. Morehead of Hanover, PA, Amy E. Henry of Dunkirk, MD, and Andrew J. Morehead of Annapolis, MD; two grandchildren, Ann E. Henry and Robert S. Henry, and soon to be grandson-in-law, Christian Watson. He is also survived by his brother, George Morehead of Michigan, his brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Frankie Morehead of Annapolis, MD, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Louise Morehead and Jean Kilburn.
A visitation for Clair will be held Friday, July 14, 2023 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM in Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401. A funeral service will occur Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 10:30 AM in Heritage Baptist Church. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
