

Dan L. Mason, resident of Anniston for the past forty-five years, died on January 29, 2026. Dan was born in Opelika, AL in 1944 and was educated in the City of Opelika school system, graduating from Opelika High School in 1962. His classmates remained life-long friends. He attended Auburn University and graduated in 1966 with a BA degree in History. At Auburn he was a member of Theta Xi fraternity. Following graduation he received his military commission in the U.S. Army as Lieutenant.
Another major event following graduation is his marriage to Jerry Wear of Opelika. He and Jerry had two children: Merrye and Alex, who died in 1987. His deceased parents were Lewis and Sara Mason and his brother was John Mason, also deceased.
During his twenty year commitment to the United States military, he served terms at several state assignments as well as tours in Viet Nam and Korea. While serving on the administrative staff for War College in Carlisle, PA, Dan obtained his Masters degree from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. He retired in 1986 as Lieutenant Colonel and retired to Anniston.
His next years were spent in several different career ventures. He taught in the Anniston school system for ten years, but his most memorable years were as ‘The Boss’ in the Boss Helpers Estate Sales.
On their return to Anniston, Dan and Jerry joined Church of the Covenant Presbyterian where they have been faithful members and leaders. Dan served as Elder on the Session for several terms.
His beloved family includes: his wife: Jerry Wear Mason; daughter: Merrye (Richard) Watts of Fernandina Beach, FL ; two granddaughters: Lindsey Watts of Savannah, GA and Caroline (Caleb) Ford of Maitland, FL; two devoted brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws: Bill, Tony, Charles, Marion, and Lynn. Nieces and nephews are also included in the family.
A Service of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Church of the Covenant Presbyterian in Anniston. A committal service will be held at a later date for family only.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Church of the Covenant Presbyterian (75 Lenlock Lane, Anniston 36206) or St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital (P.O. Box 199, Memphis, TN 38101).
