Debra Ann Shultz Honer passed peacefully in her sleep on February 18, 2022. Born in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, Debra was a long time resident of her Mother's hometown of Choccolocco, AL. She was a graduate of Jacksonville State University; completing her Master's degree while working two full time jobs and raising her daughter as a single mother. She earned her nursing license in 1991, and spent the next 24 years working as a dedicated Emergency Room nurse. She started her career working for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation/Indian Health Services at Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital, where she routinely flew out to over 50 Yupik tribal subsistence villages in an area of remote bush Alaska spanning the size of Oregon. Later, she moved to Lawrenceville, GA to work for Grady Memorial Hospital; where she met her husband of 27 years, Fred Honer. With the addition of her two step sons, Eric and Edward Honer, her family was complete.
Later working for Saint Joseph's Hospital during 9-11, Debra became a founding member of Homeland Security and worked with FEMA for several years after. Moving back to Choccolocco, AL to care for her mother, Debra began working for Regional Medical Center in Anniston, AL; where she remained until her retirement in 2015. After her mother's passing, she took charge of all aspects of her family's business; while continuing to work full time at RMC and always giving her best for her patients. Upon her retirement, she kept busy, despite her failing health, and cherished her time spent with her loved ones.
Debra was described by her friends as devoted, hard working, caring, dedicated, self-sacrificing, strong, and a very big hearted person. Her family would add stubborn and iron-willed; and the most loving and supportive mother and wife who cherished them all with her entire being.
She will be missed beyond measure by many.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or to plant a tree in memory.
