

Eleanor Malone Atkins, 94, passed away on November 16, 2017 in Charlotte, NC. She was born on June 7, in Huntsville, Alabama to Jerry Pleas and Mary Freddie Malone. Eleanor grew up in Huntsville until moving to Talladega, AL when she was a senior in high school. She graduated from Talladega High School in 1942 where she met John Atkins. They married in 1944 in Talladega, AL.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed hobbies such as sewing, crossword puzzles, knitting and crochet.
Eleanor served as Cub Scout Den Mother, a youth Sunday School teacher, and Chaplain and later PTA President of C.A. Donehoo School in Gadsden, AL.
Eleanor taught fifth and sixth grade for 26 years in Anniston. In 1982, she was honored to be chosen as “Teacher of the Year” for the Anniston City Schools.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Catharine Atkins, of Charlotte, NC, a sister, Carolyn Pence of Birmingham, AL and a brother Jerry Malone (Dot) of Atlanta, GA., and her nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry P. Malone and Mary Malone, husband, John Atkins Sr., son, John Atkins Jr., brother, Bill Malone and sisters, Thelma Phillips and Mary Corby. Graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 11 am at Pine Hill Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Talladega with Dr. Mack Amis Officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the entombment. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made to Parker Memorial Baptist Church, PO Box 2104 Anniston, AL 36202.
