Jim was born October 4, 1949, in Cobleskill, New York, to Robert “Mr. Bob” Kilmartin and Beatrice Roe Dennis. His parents preceded him in death. When Jim was a child, the family moved to Alabama where he became a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Walter Wellborn High School in 1968. He joined the U.S. Navy Seabees in August of 1968. During his military career, he was recipient of the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, The National Defense Service Medal, and other esteemed awards and ribbons for his dutiful and honorable service to his country during his two tours in Vietnam.
Jim was united in marriage to Evelyn Hudgens Butterworth on August 24, 1986, thus creating a loving blended family of their children, Bruce Butterworth (Tammy), Dana Wilson (Keith), Jaime Butterworth (Bobbie), Lugen Lutz (Robert) and Allison Alexander (Phil).
Jim was employed by the Anniston Army Depot continuing his service to his country. He retired from the Depot in September 2018. Gearhead by passion, he enjoyed making model cars, and watching Nascar. He was an avid reader and this interest was reinvigorated after his retirement. He loved spending time with his family, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife, Evelyn, of the home; their children; grandchildren, Ashley Butterworth, Casey Butterworth, Evan Simpson, Stefan Butterworth, Kendall Cook, Kaitlyn Butterworth, Ian Lutz, Mason Lutz, Emma Alexander, Noah Alexander, Ethan Butterworth and RyAnne Butterworth; their great-grandchildren, Payton Butterworth, Kaleb Butterworth, Sawyer Butterworth, Austin Waldon, Ali Waldon, Shylin Butterworth; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Kilmartin (Annette); many nieces and nephews and many friends.
Jim was laid to rest at Anniston Memorial Mausoleum. Pallbearers were Bruce Butterworth, Jaime Butterworth, Ethan Butterworth, Phil Alexander, Ashley Butterworth and Stefan Butterworth. Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Lutz and Keith Baxter.
