Lura Estelle Tyra

Lura Estelle Tyra, 97, of Altamonte Springs, died on July 5th 2023. Estelle was born January 5th, 1926 in Hazard, KY to Corbett and Carrye Elam. She grew up on a farm in Eastern Kentucky. Estelle was a real life Rosie the Riveter! Her first job was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH where she ran a machine that cut pistons for WW2 aircraft. She married returning WW2 veteran Leonard Raymond Tyra and they had 5 children: Peggy Caswell (Gary), Leonard Tyra Jr, Pamela Sapp (Jim), Margie Shanks* (Joseph) and Roger Tyra. At only 4'8", she was short in stature but a giant to those who had the privilege of knowing her. She was overflowing with joy and optimism , even in some of life's hardest moments. She was an incredible care-giver and it was her joy to take care of her family. She loved cooking, gardening, dancing, and raising the farm animals, especially the baby calves. She had eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Arrangements have been entrusted to Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Apopka and Potter's Funeral Home, West Liberty, KY.
