Emily was born September 20, 1914 in Loleta, to Manuel and Mary Oliveira. She was raised on the family ranch in the Arcata Bottoms until she married Joe Machado Jr. and moved to Samoa. They moved to Arcata when their home was completed in 1948. She then went to work for the California Barrel Factory where she met many wonderful friends. When the Barrel Factory closed she retired and became a full time housewife. She kept busy by becoming very active in St. Mary’s Church, where she remained very involved with the Altar Society, being a Eucharistic Minister and other church related duties until physically unable to continue. Emily also was active in several Portuguese lodges, including the U.P.P.E.C., I.D.E.S, and the S.P.R.S.I. She became a state-wide director of the S.P.R.S.I. and Supreme President for the year 1965-66. In this role she enjoyed traveling throughout the State of California visiting most of the cities where the lodge was active. Emily was also active with the Italian Catholic Federation and their many activities and was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West for many years.
Many Portuguese people moved from the Azores Islands to the Humboldt County area. Most of the new residents could not read or write English. She spent many hours helping the new residents learn English and also helping with the paperwork needed to become permanent residents.
She is survived by her son Richard and his wife Kathy of Orick; sisters Irene Andersen and her husband Gale of Arcata and Helen Pontoni of Arcata; granddaughters Cynthia of San Jose, Lisa and her husband Matt Lapp of Livermore; great granddaughter Mikayla Lapp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Emily is remembered by Richard and several of his neighborhood friends for baking cherry pies for the neighborhood kids using fruit picked on the Miranda ranch.
She was preceded by her parents and brothers Joseph Oliveira, Edwin Oliveira, Antone “Tony” Oliveira, and Manuel “Bob” Oliveira.
The family wants to thank Mad River Home Health for the excellent care they provided while Emily was at her home and her early stay at Timber Ridge. Hospice of Humboldt also is to be commended for the excellent services they provided during her final days. The staff at Timber Ridge was very attentive to Emily’s needs during her brief stay at the facility. The management and staff provided outstanding care.
