

She was raised in Fortuna, her father was a principle at Fortuna Elementary, and her mother was a teacher. Jean attended Fortuna Elementary School and Fortuna High School and graduated from Humboldt State in 1945. Jean taught many different grades, but her most memorable was her teaching of 7th graders at Blue Lake Elementary for 26 years.
After graduating from Humboldt State, she met and married fellow Humboldt State student Marshall Rousseau. Together they raised 6 children.
Back in her day, Jean was an avid bowler on the Monday Night League at E&O Bowl. After retiring from teaching, Jean remained active serving on several Boards in the area: Blue Lake Union Elementary School, Carrington Care Homes, and Blue Lake Industrial Park.
She was especially honored when Blue Lake Rancheria awarded an Annual Scholarship to a Blue Lake student in her name. Preceeded in death by her parents John and Oleva Hardwick and sisters Delores Schifferle and RaeAnn Janisen, grandniece Abagail (Abby) Schifferle and granddaughter Oliva Rea Bird.
She is survived by her husband Marshall; her daughters Marsha Jeffries and husband James of Fort Bragg, Julie Abrahamsen and husband Alfred, of Eureka, Janell (Bird) Smith and husband Gary of Chico, Lisa (Farley) Loomer and husband Richard of Folsom; her sons Robert and wife Jannyce Rousseau of Blue Lake and Thomas and wife Candace Rousseau of Roseville; her grandchildren Craig and wife Denise Jeffries of Pleasanton; Carrie (Jeffries) Scott and husband Eric of San Bernardino; Alfred and wife Amanda Abrahamsen of Coos Bay, OR, Adam Abrahamsen of Santa Barbara, Trevor Bird of Vacaville, CA and Spencer Bird of Jackson Hole, WY; Stacie (Farley) Nieves and husband Oscar of Sacramento, Stephanie Farley of Sacramento; Lynsey (Rousseau) Froisland and husband Aron of Blue Lake, Ryan Rousseau of Blue Lake; Jeffery, Erica, and Bradley Rousseau; her great grandchildren Grace and Luke Jeffries; Avery, Naomi, and Chloe Scott; Kieran, Tristan and Isaac Nieves. Her beloved sister-in-law- Robin Rousseau of Blue Lake and nephews Leeland Rousseau of Park City UT, Vernon Rousseau of Blue Lake and Leonard and wife Myrna Rousseau of Kneeland and grandnephews Marshall and Daylan Rousseau, and numerous nieces and nephews.
All of us will miss her, but she will forever be remembered by us and for her devotion to teaching. We were blessed to have her as a wife, mother and grandmother.
The family extends special thanks to Tanya, Genevieve, Rae, and Jeff of Visiting Angels and Stacey Dalton. And many thanks to Dr. Irvine and his staff, Debbie and Linda.
Honorary pall bearers are grandsons Alfred, Adam, Craig, Spencer, Trevor, Ryan, Jeffery and Bradley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Blue Lake Presbyterian Church, Blue Lake, CA 95525, or your favorite charity.
Services will be held at Paul's Chapel in Arcata 1070 H street, Saturday March 26th at 1:00 pm. Reception following, Mad River Grange Hall 110 Hatchery Rd in Blue Lake.
