Patricia Hunt Kosta

December 24, 1930 - August 18, 2010

Patricia (Pat) Hunt Kosta was born at the old Trinity Hospital at 13th and G Street in Arcata. She passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital after a lengthy illness. While attending high school and college in Arcata, she worked at her mother's restaurant, Geraldine's Cafe and Tatman's Bakery. She graduated from Arcata Union High School in 1948 and received a degree in Elementary Education and a lifetime teaching credential from Humboldt State College in 1952. She then married Carroll Powell, moved to the bay area and started her family and teaching career. She taught kindergarten for twenty-four years in Campbell and then retired to Pioneer where she worked at the Pioneer Library for a number of years before returning to Arcata. She loved her dog Georgie and her cat Buck. Pat enjoyed reading and relaxing at Big Lagoon and spending time with her family, friends, and caregiver Katie Coventry. She will be remembered by many for her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to make people laugh. Patricia is preceded in death by her parents, Earl Louis Spellenberg and Geraldine Hunt Spellenberg Gianoni, and her daughter Dana Beckmeyer. She is survived by her brother, Jerry Spellenberg, of McKinleyville, her daughters Penny Fradenburg of Salyer and Sandy Rice of San Jose, her grandchildren Joshua and Kimberly Fradenburg, Mitchell, Anthony, Brittany and Cortney Corbet, Erin Nagle, and her great granddaughter Kyra Fradenburg, nieces and nephews, Lisa, James, and Gerald Spellenberg and Lesley Sundberg, as well as many relatives from both the Hunt and Spellenberg families. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 4:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Eureka ( corner of Del Norte and F Street ). It was Pat's wish that any memorial contibutions be made to either the SPCA, Bones or the Humboldt chapter of the Americian Cancer Society.
