

Carlyle Claude Smith, lovingly known as “Smitty”, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Graybrier Nursing Home of Archdale, surrounded by family and friends. Carlyle was born in Switzerland County, Indiana on September 6, 1920 to James Claude and Inez Dennis Smith. He lived in Indiana most of his life graduating from Rising Sun high School and later attended barber school to work with his dad and two brothers. After being a barber for several years, he worked as a machinist at Brown Tool Co. and Stedman Machine Co. retiring after 42 years.
Shortly after high school, he married Marie Watts who passed in 1979. During their marriage they had a son, Michael.
In 1983 Smitty married Glenda Townsend of High Point. After living in Aurora, Indiana for 6 years, they moved to High Point and were members of Southside Baptist Church. When Smitty’s health began to fail, he entered Graybrier Nursing Home just a few months later Glenda joined him there where they shared the same room together. Glenda passed in May 2008.
The nurses and aides said Smitty was a special patient. He never complained. He always gave his big famous smile when asked to do so. He loved all the attention and wonderful care he was given.
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Herman Smith. Survivors include his son, Michael Smith and his wife Carolyn; granddaughters, Kim, Sheri and Patty and great grandson, Tanner, all of Aurora, Indiana; step-daughter, Myron Smith and her husband Doug; their grandchildren, Mike, Traci and Tricia and great grandchildren, Tori, Madison, Aubrie, Luke, Davis and Alex.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 7th at 1:00pm at Sechrest Funeral Service in Archdale with Pastor Taylor Humphries officiating. Entombment will follow at Floral Gardens Cemetery in High Point.
Family will receive friends on Monday from 12:00 – 1:00pm at the funeral home.
