Alice Graf

Alice started life in Corona, NY, growing up with the love and support of her parents, siblings, grandmother and aunt. She attended Flushing High School and then graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Queens College. It was at Queens College where she met Edgar Graf while working in the registrar’s office. Ed and Alice had a date to play tennis, and it was “love-love” at first sight. They both graduated from Queens College in 1951 and married in 1954 after Ed returned from service in the Marine Corps.

After receiving her Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University, she started teaching home economics at Port Washington Middle School, leaving that position after a few years to begin raising her children, Stephen, Nancy and Susan. The family lived in Flushing, NY before moving to a home in New Hyde Park, NY in 1960. She began teaching evening adult education classes in sewing, crafts and cooking at Sewanhaka and Elmont High Schools in 1963. She continued in that role for almost 50 years. She meticulously prepared for her classes and enjoyed teaching her students, many of whom remained lifelong friends.

Alice led a very active life. She swam long distances at the local pool and played tennis with her family. She enjoyed vacations with family, visiting numerous National Parks, Hawaii, the Caribbean and even Spain and Morocco. She was an avid reader and participated in numerous library book clubs. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Alice was a faithful Christian.

Alice is survived by her children, Stephen Graf, Nancy Graf, and Susan (John) Ross; grandchildren, Julie Graf, Michael (Lauren) Thomas, Alex (Ellen) Ross and Meaghan Ross; brother, Fred (Eileen) Jacobi; sister, Marie Bahrenburg; great-grandchildren, Talia, Atlas and Theo; many nieces and a nephew.

She is preceded in death by her parents; aunt, Marie Rabut; and beloved husband, Edgar Graf.

Family will be receiving guests on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd, Arlington Heights, IL, 60004. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Luther Village Retirement Community, 1250 Village Dr, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island, New York.
