After a long, rich, and rewarding life, Anastasia Mary Slattery, born on November 26, 1940, in Chicago, to James and Ellen Sharkey (née Croake), died on April 13, 2023.
Ann was a devoted wife, daughter, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend. Possessing a keen intellect, Ann was a voracious reader, gourmet cook, skilled seamstress, published author, passionate tennis player, and nobody’s fool.
Perhaps Ann’s greatest gift was unearthing the potential in her students at John Hersey High School and inspiring them to grow to achieve it. She was a fulcrum whose knowledge, wisdom, and kindness changed the trajectory of thousands of lives.
Ann is survived by her fiercely devoted husband, Bill, whom she wed on April 23, 1966. Graced with great humor and a spirit of adventure, together they travelled the world, entertained legions of friends and family, and shared the joys, challenges, and blessings of full and purposeful lives.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
