Dr. Dan M. Moore was born on April 22, 1934, in Ewing, IL to John W. and Mattie A. (nee King) Moore. He died Tuesday, January 11, 2022 in Prospect Heights.
Dr. Moore was a dedicated educator for High School District 214, teaching Spanish and Geography at Prospect High School for 31 years. He also taught Spanish at Fasman Yeshiva High School at the Hebrew Theological College in Skokie, IL for 20 years. Dan completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. In 1969, he received a doctorate in Latin American Studies from Interamerican University in Saltillo, Mexico.
Dan was known by many as Doc Moore, Doc Más or Coach Moore. Dan had two great athletic passions fastpitch softball and golf. Dan dedicated himself to fastpitch softball, the game he played as a young man. He became an official Prospect High School softball coach in 1986. He trained and mentored young women as pitchers. Many went on to play in college and became coaches themselves. In 2001, he took his coaching talents to Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, IL where he coached until 2009. Along with his love for softball, he started playing golf in his 30s. After nearly 50 years of playing golf, he accomplished a hole in one - it was a big day for him in 2015. Besides playing golf, he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States attending professional golf tournaments.
In his retirement, he completed coursework in writing your own life story. He completed his manuscript in 2021. His memoir, entitled, Who Was I and How Did That Happen? will be published in 2022. Dan was a loving Christian and an active member of Song of Life UMC in Queen Creek, AZ.
Dan is survived by his spouse of 42 years, Nita (nee Furlong); sisters-in-law, Geraldine (Darrell McGregor) Furlong and Georgine (Glenn) Voight; brother-in-law, Michael Furlong; nephews, Billy Marshall, Nathan Rowader; nieces, Emily (Brian) Lyons, Carly Rowader, Mary Voight; niece-in-law, Candace Marshall as well as many great nieces and nephews. He embraced his family role in life as Uncle Dan and so enjoyed nurturing his youngest great nieces, Lily, Hannah, and Ella.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marian Cole, Dorothy Ponder and Patty Marshall.
Interment was held privately at Ewing Cemetery in Ewing, IL. A Celebration of Life for Dan M. Moore will be held this spring/early summer.
