Dom was a man of quiet strength and grace who met life’s challenges with calm resolve. This was most evident in later years, as he courageously overcame both colon and prostate cancer before passing away from pancreatic cancer.
He enjoyed a long and successful career with Anglo American before retiring to the United States. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dom was known for his integrity, generosity, and commitment to service. A qualified lawyer by training, he freely offered legal counsel to members of his community whenever it was needed.
Faith and service were central to Dom’s life. In South Africa, he was a Knight of Da Gama and later served as a Grand Knight. After relocating to the U.S., he became a founding member of the Knights of Columbus at his local parish in San Diego and served as a Minister of the Eucharist in several parishes.
Dom was also a warm and joyful presence. A natural entertainer and bon vivant, he was adored by his family and loved by friends, some of whom affectionately called him “Thompson”. His sense of humor, including his fondness for inventing amusing words and expressions, is lovingly remembered by his children.
Dom was the rock of his family and leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, integrity, and love.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jennifer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Brenda; his children, Damian, Justin (Mary-Ann), Gavin (Urszula), Michael, and Lawrence; his grandchildren, Matthew, Luke, Michele, Nicole, Eliza, and Ethan; his siblings, Cathy, Joan, and Mary; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
