John Mantas, age 97, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in 1927, in the tiny village of Perdikovrisi, Greece, as the first of nine children, John’s early life was shaped by the hardships of the depression, wars and the strength of family. At a young age, he became a police officer in Athens and he married the love of his life, Stella, with whom he shared 73 devoted years. Together they emigrated to the United States with their two young children bravely beginning a new life and eventually welcoming their third child after settling in Chicago.
John worked tirelessly to provide for his family and was proud to be both Greek and American. He was a respected leader within the Greek community, actively serving in political organizations dedicated to improving the lives of Greek immigrants and their families.
One of John’s greatest joys was found in his home and his family. His garden was his sanctuary, where he grew vegetables and fruit that rivaled expert growers, and flowers so vibrant they were the envy of neighbors. More than anything, John cherished time with his wife, children and extended family.
John is preceded in death by his beloved parents, his brothers Jim, Gus and Nick and his sisters, Eleftheria, Evanthia, and Athena and many dear friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Stella; his children, Avra (Ted), Chris (Marge), and Bill (Mickey); his sisters Georgia and Vaso; his seven grandchildren (Alexia, Chris, Selissa, John, Christina, Marina and Anastasia); his two great-grandchildren (Christina and Jesse); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly
John’s legacy is one of resilience, devotion, and love. His memory will live on through the family he built, the community he served, and the lives he so lovingly nurtured. May his memory be eternal.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 133 S. Roselle Rd., Palatine, IL 60067. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 AM. Due to limited space at cemetery the interment will be private for just immediate family.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Center in Wheeling, Illinois.
