March 16, 1953 – August 29, 2025
John Francis McGuinnis, Jr., beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away far too soon, leaving behind a life defined by love, laughter, and devotion to family.
Born on March 16, 1953, to John and Eleanore McGuinnis, John grew up with a sharp wit, a big heart, and an unshakable sense of humor. Known for his abiding love for his family and his refusal to suffer fools, John filled every room with warmth and laughter.
John married the love of his life, Katy, on September 21, 1985. Together they built a home filled with joy, chaos, and unconditional love—complete with pets of every kind, thanks to John’s big heart and even bigger soft spot for animals. Their nearly 40 years together were marked by adventures, vacations, and everyday moments that will live on in the hearts of their children.
More than anything, John loved being a dad. He was at his happiest watching his children—Madelyn, Johnny, and Isabelle—compete in sports, serving as their biggest cheerleader, coach, and constant supporter. John’s pride in his family was unshakable, and his presence in the stands or on the sidelines will be deeply missed.
For the past 20 years, John could be found on fields and courts across the northwest suburbs, umpiring softball and refereeing basketball and football. Whether calling balls and strikes or blowing the whistle, he was respected for his fairness, his humor, and the joy he brought to the games.
John also cherished time spent traveling with his family. Whether they were in a cabin in Wisconsin, exploring the Hawaiian Islands, or discovering somewhere new, John made sure fun, adventure, and good food were always part of the plan.
He leaves behind his devoted wife Katherine, his children Madelyn Zoe (Dayne Harris), John Francis III (Phoebe Bates), and Isabelle Mary Juan, his “bonus daughter” Julia Aschenbrenner, sister, Mary Kay (John) Kenyon, as well as beloved cousins, adored nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends who became family. John’s absence leaves an irreplaceable hole in the lives of all who loved him, but his humor, generosity, and fierce love will live on in their hearts.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Eleanore, sister, Patricia Jacobsen, and brother, James McGuinnis.
John’s legacy is not only in the games he called or the vacations he planned but in the everyday love he gave so freely. He will be remembered always as a husband, father, and friend whose greatest joy was in being surrounded by the people he loved most.
A visitation for John will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at the Lauterburg-Oehler Funeral Home (2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights, IL). A second visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 10:00am at St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church (301 S. I Oka Avenue, Mount Prospect, IL) with Mass to immediately follow at 11:00am.
