Our condolences to the Pittas family from the Lilly family.

Dear Jay, Marc, Doug, Dave, Jim, Greg, Terri, and Family,  As the Director of Alumni Relations Emeritus, I offer you the sympathy and prayers of the Saint Viator/Sacred Heart of Mary community, as well as my own.    Know that our hearts go out to you as you move through your journey of grief. We pray for you as you share the stories and photos, like those posted on the Tribute Wall;  laugh and cry; and find ways to celebrate the life of your father and the love you shared.  As I read Jay’s words in the Daily Herald about this man of deep faith man who along with being “very dedicated and devoted to his family” also had "a remarkable intellectual and professional side,” I was reminded of an adaptation of a reading from the Book of Sirach.  “Let us praise an illustrious man, 	faithful to his family and friends, strong in his love. At peace in his heart and his world, 	he has left us his good name, and we recount his life of praiseworthy deeds. A generous man his good works will never be forgotten. Among his family and friends remains a rich inheritance born of him…. His name lives on from generation to generation. We gather to sing his praises. We proclaim his wisdom and love of life all our days.”  May you be comforted by the fact that death cannot take away the love, the memories, the faith! May the knowledge your father lives on in your goodness, give you peace and hope!  Take care and God bless you with the gifts you most need! To the Pittas family,  My deep condolences go out to all in the Pittas family with the passing of Jack.  I had the good fortune and privilege of knowing and working for Jack for several years at UOP and again at Laporte plc.  A trusted mentor and insightful leader; Jack had a profound impact on my career in the years I was his assistant at UOP and later in Laporte.  I will forever treasure my many fond memories of Jack and the times we spent together both professionally and socially.    With heart felt sympathies,  John Hardin

Jack's visits were always a shining light to those of us who were overseas.   Of course he was a great president at UOP and my husband Howard admired him greatly.   He was also a diplomat and knew how to calm the most disgruntled spouses.   I doubt that he ever missed a Christmas party in London and relied on a few of the wives to rescue him at times by asking him to dance.  He always had time to listen if there were any problems.  And we always loved listening to his many stories.   My condolences to his family.   Donna Fullerton

So saddened to hear of Jack's passing. He was one of the best CEO's UOP has had (and I've now seen 11 of them), taking us through introducing new technologies to the world like CCR Platforming and Parex, navigating UOP's relationship with the various owners. Always calm, good-humored, astute and a great negotiator, especially with UOP's toughest customers.  My best memory was a winter night walk back to Knightsbridge across Hyde Park in London after a late night dinner with Russian energy ministers.

Jack was a great leader for UOP in the ‘80’s.  Well-respected both inside and outside the company.  He was a hard-driving business leader, but always very approachable and personable at the same time.  He will be missed by all who knew him - Jeff Burgard

I remember Jack was CEO when I was hired with UOP. I didn't know him personally, but I know 'of' him and his great reputation as a leader. What a great photo, he looks just like I remember. RIP

I was saddened to learn of Mr.Pittas’ passing. My father,Don Carson, who passed away in 1997, worked for him at UOP and both my dad and my mom Shirley, were great friends of Mr.Pittas and his late wife. Susan Jacobson

Oh, the tales he could tell…and the tales we could tell about him!  From Emile Schwantz, Railroader…How he turned a typo in a proposal  into a negotiating victory…the stories from SOP, the absolute best one being when he (finally) left and thought his car had been stolen when it turned out that Elaine had come and taken his car and left him her car…on empty!  The infamous dunking in the Des Plaines River…party all you want the night before, but be sure you beat him into the office in the morning!  Whenever “old” UOPers get together, inevitably there are shared stories of Jack, and he would be the first person to laugh at them; and give back as good as he got.  One of a kind…the good kind.
