Born on November 4, 1937, in Chicago, IL, he was the cherished son of the late John and Gertrude Sterbenz. John's journey through life was marked by dedication, warmth, and a deep connection with those he loved.
John's heart belonged to his family, and he was a loving husband of 65 years to his beloved wife, Judy Sterbenz. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, support, and countless cherished memories. He was a dear father who provided for and guided his children, John (Michelle), Thomas, Timothy (Zaira), and Christopher Sterbenz, with a gentle hand and a steady presence. John took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Shannon, Kayla, Jake, Meghan, TJ, Allison, and Laine Sterbenz, and as a great-grandfather to Claira, Bennett, and Hayden. He will be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Hams, and by all those who were fortunate enough to be considered part of his extended family.
Professionally, John was respected for his skill and reliability, having worked as a cement finisher. His dedication to his craft was evident in his long-standing association with the Local 502 Cement Masons International Association, where he was a lifetime member. John's colleagues knew him as a man of integrity and commitment, qualities that he brought to every project and interaction throughout his career.
John's passions extended beyond his work. He was an avid fisherman who cherished the tranquility and excitement of the sport. Many will recall the joy he found in spending time with family at their Apple Canyon Lake house, where the bonds of family were strengthened, and the simplicity of nature was fully appreciated. An animal lover at heart, John found contentment in caring for the birds and stray cats that would visit his home, offering them food.
Those who knew John understood that his wisdom was a gift that he shared generously. He was a source of sound advice and thoughtful reflection, always ready to listen and offer his perspective. His loving nature was felt in every embrace, every act of kindness, and every word of encouragement he provided. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in John’s honor be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.
The visitation for John will be on Friday, January 31 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N Buffalo Grove Rd, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089. The funeral mass will start at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Cemetery, 1185 W Algonquin Rd, Palatine, IL.
