Lawrence E. Doherty was born on May 28, 1931 in Hillside, IL to Frank and Mary (nee Odger) Doherty. He died Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Radford Green (Sedgebrook Retirement Community) Lincolnshire, Illinois.
Lawrence is a 1948 graduate of St. Philip high school in Chicago. He served his country in the Army in the Public Information Office of the 24th Infantry Division, located in Sendai, Japan. The Division was moved to Korea in July of 1953. While serving, Lawrence earned the Korean Service Ribbon,the Bronze Campaign Star, the National Defence Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal and commendation ribbon. His service in the army ended in May of 1954.
Lawrence then began his journalism career working for the City News Bureau before returning to complete his education at The University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, graduating with a BS in Journalism in 1957. It was there he met his bride-to-be, Jackie Murphy. They were married September 7, 1957.
Lawrence continued his career in journalism as a reporter for Advertising Age in Chicago. In1962 he moved to Food Business and in 1966 took an opportunity in New York City with Progressive Grocer. In 1972 the family returned to Chicago when Lawrence returned to Advertising Age, where he became Managing Editor and remained there until his retirement in 1996.
Lawrence is survived by his children, Lauren (Roger) Wilson, Matthew (Marian)
Doherty, Julie Doherty, Sheila (Todd) Roth and Lisa (Mike) Zaroogian; his grandchildren Madeline, Patrick, Celia, Colleen, Jacqueline, Gregory and Kathleen; and his sister
Ellen (Harry) Hadley; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Barbara Jacqueline “Jackie” Doherty, his parents and his brothers, Robert, Raymond and John.
Visitation Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.), Arlington Heights, IL 60004 and on Monday, October 15, 2018 from 11:30 am until time of Funeral Mass at 12:30 pm at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 301 S. I-Oka, Mount Prospect, IL 60056. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
