Our fondest memory of Pete (and Judy) was at one of the first Jubilations we attended and we were at their table.  What a beautiful night of laughs and dancing so much so we closed the joint down.  It is sad to know that one of the kindest most loving men we've ever met has past but St. John Chrystostom reminds us "They whom we love and lost are no longer where they were before. What an incredibly kind and generous man Pete was - always willing to take on major roles to help at St. James! But in addition, Pete did thousands of small acts of kindness that were simply second nature to him. I remember him offering to escort an elderly disabled couple into the Parish Center from the parking lot for weekly Sunday mass. He was so kind to them & made them feel so special. Pete was always a personable and professional law enforcement leader. We first met through the Norfolk, England/ University of Illinois police exchange program of which Pete was a strong supporter.  Pete and his family opened their hearts and beautiful home to support this program of international police leadership.  Pete was proud of his profession, had a deep love of BGPD and was a good man. Pete was the BEST grill master.  He taught me a few secrets of grilling  and cooking.  He will missed.

While I did not know Pete when he was working on the BG Police force, I do believe that he was a model of the Police motto - to protect and to serve.  Pete’s protective nature was evidenced in the way he cared for his wife, family and the community.  And while the call to serve is not always easy, Pete was able to bring his quiet but commanding presence to any situation that reminded me not to worry but to trust instead.  I believe that our Father in Heaven purposefully brings people into our lives.  In this way, I was blessed to have known Pete through the St. James Liturgy Board, as a Eucharistic minister, and the Alpha Program.  Thank you Lord for sharing Pete, your good and faithful servant, with me.

Pete Lippert was such a special man. For many years he was my most dependable Pads volunteer. He was an excellent cook and always happy to contribute. His kind and generous spirit will not be forgotten. I always felt so lucky that he was on my  4th week team. I can only imagine what’s fabulous father and grandfather that he was. My most sincere condolences to all of his family. You’ll be in my prayers.

I am so sorry for the loss of this incredible man. I have been part of the leadership team for the PADS program for many years and Pete has always been a solid supporter of the homeless. He cooked and he cared. He was plagued when people were out in the cold. We have been blessed to have great support from the police but Pete’s compassion was unusually kind. Pete was always friendly and supportive to all he met. I’m grateful we have this angel among the heavenly revelers to watch over us. May God bless you and the rest of us as we grieve. I have many memories, but the clearest are of Pete cooking and serving at Alpha dinners. He always had a warm smile, delicious food and a humble manner. He and Judy gave so much of there time, talent and treasure to St. James. May he rest in God’s arms

Several years ago, my brother-in-law passed away very suddenly.  Pete and Judy are close neighbors of my sister, and when they heard the devastating news, they put together a much appreciated dinner for all of our family members gathered in grief at my sister's home. I have been Peter's massage therapist for the last several years and was deeply saddened by hearing of his passing. He was a wonderful man who shared many stories about his life. He loved his family deeply and had such a passion for life and a great attitude. He gave good advice and shared lots of yummy recipes! I had the opportunity to know Pete through Judy's participation in the 10 AM choir, where she JOYfully shared her gift of faith through music. Just as Fr. Matt said in that beautiful tribute to Pete today, he volunteered in so many ways, always ready to serve.  A number of of years ago, Pete was a founding member of the St. James Domestic Violence Ministry, Stepping Stones. He brought his years of police experience to our founding team - his perspectives were very valuable as we started out, not knowing what to do! And I echo Diane Adam's point about his fabulous cooking skills - Stepping Stones had a social event and he won the 'dip off' contest by making the best dip! Michael and I also so enjoyed seeing him at mass while we sang in the choir, just beaming with joy.  To Judy and the entire family, we will keep you in our prayers during this difficult time. We met Peter in 2015 when we had recently moved to AH and were trying to build a team to host Alpha.  He quietly told us that we could count on him to cook every week…and he was true to his word, helping to plan the menus, buying supplies, cooking, feeding, cleaning up.  He was a faithful servant!  The last time we saw Peter and Judy was about a month ago.  We attended an outdoor Sunday evening Mass and talked with them afterward.  It was a warm October evening, and they began walking home from Mass.  We again saw them when we got to the corner of Hawthorne and Dunton—holding hands and enjoying the evening, like a couple very much in love.  It is a very fitting way to remember him.  We hope we, too, can be humble servants and have Peter and Judy as  valuable role models.   Pete & Kris Wray

Having the privilege of knowing Pete and Judy from singing next to Judy in the choir for many years has been an absolute JOY.  Choir parties, concerts, recordings, special masses, midnight mass Christmas Eve, Easter morning....they are all wonderful memories that Pete shared with us because he was always there! I met Pete through the Alpha program at St. James.  What an amazing man.  I loved hearing his story about going to culinary school after retiring from the police department.  His passion for bringing people together over delicious yummy food is truly admired.  I will forever think of him when I make his Butterscotch Cashew Bars.  He understood the nuances of flavors.  The man could cook!  I loved watching him smile as he helped serve up supper to our Alpha guests.  My deepest condolences to his family.  God Bless.

Pete once told me that he was not just in the military (as I was also,  )but that he was in actual combat in the Vietnam war .  Pete had the duty of patrolling the battleground the day after  to bring back the bodies and look for survivors.  One thing that shook him to the core  was when he found the decapitated Blond head of one of his buddies.  It affected him deeply and he was treated for PTSD for a year after returning home .    He later signed up for a career path as a police officer and became a Commander .  Pete had a strong sense of right and wrong and law and order.  He exemplified discipline, integrity, virtue , compassion, tough kindness,  and lived to make a contribution to others with a good sense of humor.    He was totally devoted to taking care of his wife .Judy.  Here's to a life well lived that set a wonderful example for others  of how the game should be played .  John D. Ford

Peter was an active figure at St James. He taught me how to become a Eucharist minister and we both served on the same EM team at the 10 am mass. His smile and kindness were a tribute to who he was as a man in our parish. He will be missed by many. I pray for his wife Judy and all his children and grandchildren. God is  good-all the time, All the time-God is good.

My first encounter with Pete occurred in 2015, immediately after the Easter Vigil Mass.  I had only recently returned to the Church so I didn't know a lot of people by name.  He addressed me by name and I still don't know how he knew it, but he urged me to become a Eucharistic Minister.  Feeling so very unworthy I came up with numerous excuses, all of which he foiled.  Normally I would be annoyed with such persistence but he managed to get me to agree without me resenting him.  He eased my fears and seemed so happy the day our group was mandated.  I hope he knew how his efforts to get me to serve was actually giving me a great gift.  It has been a great honor to serve and has established a closer connection to Christ.  I'm sure he knew and that is why he was so happy for us new EM's.  Thank you Pete and I'll forever remember you and be grateful for you touching my life.

Pete was just salt of the earth as is Judy and their whole family.  I’ll never forget Pete training me to be an EM and I was very nervous about learning about how to do everything just right because it’s such a special role. Pete told our group not to worry about anything, that we would be ok and know what to do, there’d always be others there to help us and the best thing about being an EM was seeing Jesus in every person who receives the body and blood of our Lord. Every time I get to EM, I think of Pete & I do see Jesus in every single person. What a gift he gave me.  I also worked with Pete counting the collection on Mondays and he mainly talked about the love of his life, Judy, his family and grandchildren’s accomplishments, his trips up north and the Cubs. He was just such a caring and servant man. I got to know Judy well as she was a religious education catechist for many years. She is such a faithful woman who wanted every child to know God and his love for each of them. I can see why Judy & Pete loved each other and our Lord so much. I am lifting up Pete, Judy, Susan, Nancie, Amy and their families in my prayers.

Pete I remember so vividly how you sat near the front at 10 Mass in the Parish Center supporting Judy as she sang in the Soprano section of our choir. What a great protector and caregiver. May God hold the whole Lippert family in the palm of his hand.

Pete was the consummate professional who always cared about the people around him.  He was responsible for doing my background investigation to become a police officer at BGPD.  Although stern in that interview, he softened as we got to know and work together over the years.  I’m so thankful I was able to know Pete as a co-worker and friend.  He was always giving, a notion repeated by many at today’s service.  My heartfelt condolences go out to Judy and family. I remember Pete helping us through the German airport on our Italy trip with Fr. John.  We never would have made it without him! He spoke German, made it so much easier. Pete and Judy never failed to say hello as we passed in church, me to 11:30 choir, Judy coming from 10:00 choir, and Pete from ushering & Eucharistic Ministry. Always friendly and gracious. Pete was a very special person and I'm very sad that he has left us. But I'm sure he walked into the welcoming arms of Our Lord. Rest in eternal peace, Pete.

Tom and I got to know Pete when he took over on the St. James liturgy board as the lead of over 100 Eucharistic Ministers. We would go out to dinner as couples with Pete and Judy. We introduced him to his favorite restaurant Joe and Giuseppe’s. Pete was the best cook and he treasured great food. We would love to hear about his annual July 4th all day party where he prepared food to share with his family and friends. Judy joined a bible study with 7 of us. We would have a potluck Christmas party and Pete would send the most delicious entree even though he wasn’t going. I was part of the St. James Alpha. Alpha invites others to know Jesus better. What better way to know Jesus then to share a meal together before starting the meeting. Pete was a main weekly chef. Chef not cook because his recipes were beyond simple. He would often make double to make sure their was enough. Pete and Judy would deliver it together and stay to serve. Pete also did meals for St. James PADS guests as well. When Judy sang in the St. James 10 AM choir Pete was always there to serve again as a Eucharistic Minister. Judy would be in other St. James special holiday concerts. Pete would join me and Judy’s sisters and daughters to be blessed to hear the choir as Judy beamed while singing praises to God. Pete and Judy gave so much to their God, parish and community. That is why they were honored with one of the Catholic Church’s highest honors the Christifidelis award. They received this award at Holy Name Cathedral 3 yrs to the day that Pete died. I can just see Jesus hugging Pete as he arrived saying “well done my good and faithful servant!”  Pete cared for everyone especially Judy when she needed him the most. He made sure he and Judy went to work out at Fitness 19 on Campbell. He knew with his asthma he had to have a trainer to keep him strong. Pete was the strongest most loving man. My sincerely condolences. He was a great man who truly loved his family. I recall so many stories he'd talk about everyone (and he NEVER missed an opportunity to talk about Charlie). I've got a few memories of Pete, but one I'll always remember was when I was a young detective (about 6 mos into my assignment). I had to pick up "Commander Lippert" from O'Hare. I've always held him in high esteem and was a bit intimidated by him, so wanting to impress him, I got the undercover detective car washed and parked it in the fire lane so that I could greet him at the gate (this was before 9/11). I left the car and greeted him at the gate. As we walked outside I saw the tow truck driving away with the car in tow!! He was actually very gracious and patient with me while I spent the next hour finding the car and getting it back. He never mentioned it again to me in all the time I worked for him, and to this day, I try to have the same grace to the younger officers when they screw up.  He'll certainly be missed!

Pete was my brother-in-law and I loved him very much. He certainly was always there to keep me out of trouble!  We golfed together, went to Bears games together, cooked together and just loved being together with family.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a retired Deputy Policy Chief.  He stayed active with the police force even after he retired, lending his experience to others in the police force and community.  Pete was a wonderful, loving brother-in-law to Diane (Art) and me (Karyl), a loving Godfather to Patrick and Jack and loving Uncle and Great Uncle to many.  He loved to spoil his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  Pete loved and was so proud of his family.  He loved golfing with his friends, brother-in-laws and family, boating and fishing, traveling, with yearly trips to Hawaii and many return trips to his home town in Germany to see his extended family, loved his dogs and cats and really loved to cook for everyone.  He received his Chef Certification from the California Culinary Institute of America and continued to dazzle his family with his wonderful recipes and made what we considered the most out of this world Thanksgiving and Christmas soups and by far, created the best sausage bread, everyone in the family and his neighborhood enjoyed.   He will be dearly missed.  I love you, Pete.

We have had the pleasure of getting to know Pete these last couple of years as he enjoyed their vacation home in Wisconsin.  What we learned during this time is that he had a great love for Judy, his children, his grandchildren and his extended family. He burdened many heavy things in his life and it seems so unfair that he has left this earth, but we have to believe he is peacefully floating on a calm lake, with his fishing pole at his side and enjoying an eternity of beautiful days.

I was reminded of this not so long ago when I happened to run into him at Mariano's.  We had a really nice conversation and caught up a little bit; Pete was his warm and unhurried self, and as I was driving home, I remember thinking that he just made me feel better, and what a remarkable man he was! In the 1980s and 90s, there was an association between police departments in Illinois, USA and the police force in Norfolk, UK. Close working relationships evolved between American and British police. Both sides of 'the pond', officers were learning from each other. Deputy Chief Peter Lippert was one of the leaders of the American side of this organisation.  Friendships between police families developed and many still exist. I felt it appropriate to announce to a Norfolk UK retired officers group, information regarding the sad passing of our friend and colleague, Peter.  Twenty nine retired officers and myself wish to pass to Peter's family and friends, our sincere condolences and blessings.  Rest in Peace Peter and thanks for everything.  God Bless. Mel
