Richard T. Erler was born on November 29, 1932 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Jerry and Ruth (nee Hammelmann) Erler. He died Monday, December 11, 2017 at Northwest Community Hospital.
Due to his father’s occupation, Richard was raised in Mexico City, Brazil, Cuba, and Argentina and was fluent in Spanish. He had a long career as a bank officer and had been employed with Irving Park, Deerfield, O’Hare, Plum Grove, and First National Bank of Arlington Heights before retiring. During his retirement he worked as a crossing guard at Olive Mary Stitt, Patton and Thomas Middle School.
Richard was a member of the Rolling Meadows Chamber of Commerce and volunteered at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library teaching reading and English as a second language. He enjoyed playing basketball, especially when he lived abroad, tennis, and golf.
Richard is survived by his children, Richard K. Erler, Ruy W. Erler, Timothy (Christina) Erler, and Thomas (Rosemary) Erler; his grandchildren, Adam (Samantha) Erler, Jessica (Tyler) Howland, Natalie Erler, Elizabeth Erler, Carmela (Mike) Linker, Bobby (Coreane) Mangione, and Michael (Brianne) Mangione; and great-grandchildren, Margaret, Michael, Billy, Mary, Robby, and Nate.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jean (Mulrooney) Erler; and by his parents.
His family will receive guests 11:00 am until 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Interment private.
