Shirley was born on June 11th, 1933, in Litchfield, IL, the daughter of Frederick W. and Genevieve Cubin (nee Treesh). She graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1951 where she met her husband, Don R. Drain. They were married for 63 years when Don passed away in 2018.
After high school, Shirley attended Walther Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Chicago and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1954. Her nursing career included serving at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights as well as in a private practice. She retired in 1982.
Shirley was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, where she sang in the choir for many years. She also was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Effingham, IL for many years after moving to Lake Sara, IL upon retirement. She loved her church community and served it throughout her life.
Shirley had great love for her family. For many years she enjoyed hosting the family at the lake house on Lake Sara in Central Illinois. She treasured the time with her grandchildren and enjoyed playing games of all kinds. There was always a hot game of Sequence or Uno going after dinner. Shirley also loved to sing. During her last few years at the Lutheran Home, she could always be seen smiling and joining in on the music programs whether it be patriotic songs, old time numbers or hymns. Music always brought her joy. She greatly enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren share her love of music.
Shirley is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Frank) Blum of Stillwater, OK, Judie (Jim) King of Arlington Heights, IL, and Nancy (Donald) Freeman of Lakewood, CA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Frank (Jamie Couey) Blum Jr., Rebecca Blum, Katie (Michelle) King, Jamie (Paul) Russo, Mollie King, Erin Freeman (Thaddeus Daniels) and Vanessa Freeman. Shirley is also survived by five great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Anne Reilly (nee Cubin) of Fayetteville, AR.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents; and a brother, Frederick W. Cubin of Casper, WY.
Burial will be held privately in Shelbyville, IL. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date.
During her time at the Lutheran Home, the programs and activities organized by the staff brought Shirley great joy and community. She participated in all the field trips like fishing at Busse Woods or Bowling and would sing along with every music program, especially Music with Susan. Her life was blessed by the people who dedicate time and effort to planning, organizing and carrying out these activities.
