Steppen Aman Yi (Korean name Yo-Seung Yi) was born on April 28, 1954 in Seoul, South Korea to Hui-Son and Pok-Nam Yi. He died Monday, July 13, 2020 at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois.
Mr. Yi was a U.S. Army veteran, a philosophy student, and an engineer at Motorola for over 20 years. He was a devoted and loving father to three daughters. He saw himself a naturalist. By the end of his life, he had visited all U.S. national parks, and drove to every corner of the country. His most beloved and sacred place was the massacre site at Wounded Knee, in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The history and plight of Native Americans was a subject near to his heart. He was also well-read in history, especially of WWII, both Eastern and Western philosophy, feminism, and religious studies. He was an avid writer, poet and photographer, and a wonderful storyteller. Steppen is survived by his three daughters, Eunice Lafko, Janice Yi and Candice Yi; his grandson, Wyatt Lafko; and his siblings, Yo-Jung Yi, Yo-Soon Yi, Yo-Eun Yi, Dennis Lhee, Yo-Bong Yi, Raymond Yi, and Judy Kim. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Yeo-Deuk Lee. Services are private.
