Elgie loved to play the guitar and sing. He loved to listen to old country songs and artists from the Grand Ole Opry. He and his wife Fay belonged to Yesterday’s Young Clogging group. They danced in this group for many years. They loved dancing with this group and going “Honky-Tonkin.” Having served in the USAF as a navigator fueled his interest in Astronomy since it was necessary to know how to use the stars to navigate. Having that interest he borrowed a large rolling telescope from his friend and carpool partner. That borrowing turn out to last for many years as Elgie would invite the neighborhood residents and children to view the stars and moon.
Elgie served 20 years in the United States Air Force as a navigator/bombardier in a number of planes with the most notable being the B-52 and B-47 bombers. He served in the Vietnam War and was stationed 2 years with his family in the Philippines from 1968 to 1970. He retired with the rank of Lt Colonel at Dyess Air Force base in Abilene, Texas in 1974.
Next, in 1975 he and his family moved to Arlington, Texas were he started his next career working for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Worth as a Civil Engineer in the branch of Hydrology and Hydraulics. This is where he met his carpool partner and the owner of the telescope. Elgie enjoyed the company of several carpool partners through the years who lived in the neighborhood. He had many funny and interesting stories of those commutes to Fort Worth.
Elgie is preceded in death by his father, John Virgil Henderson; mother, Cleo Cox Henderson; and brother, Eddie Henderson (AKA - Corky).
He is survived by his wife, Fay Henderson; son, John Henderson and wife Lisa; and his grandson, Christopher Henderson.
