Juanita spent the majority of her childhood in Mount Vernon. After graduating from high school, she attended Fenn College in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met her future husband, Donald E. Burkhouse. During this period she also did some fashion modeling in New York. This led to her love of not only fashion, but specifically bridal wear.
Juanita and Donald moved to Arlington, Texas in 1950 when Don accepted employment with Ling, Temco, and Vought (LTV) as an aeronautical engineer. She and Don then started a family and had a son and two daughters (David, Diane and Cheryl). While raising her family, she spent many years working in the bridal industry with JC Penney’s and then as the lead bridal consultant at Wedding World.
Juanita had a variety of hobbies over the years. She collected bridal dolls, loved singing, gardening and watching figure skating on TV while talking with Cheryl on the phone. She also loved to entertain with lavish food and table settings. She truly enjoyed time with her family with cookouts and swimming in the summer. Those who knew her have described her as sophisticated, feisty, loving and quiet. Juanita also truly loved dogs, specifically Bichon Frise.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Jessie Draper, husband Donald, and her son-in-law Roger McCurdy.
Juanita is survived by her son David Burkhouse; her daughters Diane McCurdy and Cheryl Burkhouse; her grandkids, Rodger McCurdy (Jamye), Greg McCurdy (Kierra), Robert McCurdy (Joenne) and Steven McCurdy (Debbie).
Juanita’s services will be held on September 27, 2022 at Moore Bowen Road Funeral Home, 4216 S. Bowen Road, Arlington, Texas 76016. The visitation will be held from 9-10 am, the funeral service at 10-11 am with committal immediately following.
