In October 1950 at the age of 22, Marthon was called into the service of the United States Army and served in the Korean War in 1951. He was a Private First Class in the 21st Infantry Regiment, Company F of the 24th Division. At the time of his honorable discharge from the US Army, he had received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge and the UN Service Medal.
Marthon married Cora Langham on August 17, 1968 and they built a fabulous life for 53 years with God being at the core of everything they did. Together they raised four treasured children and many years later they opened their heart and home to another Daughter whose life they forever changed. He retired after 45 years of service with Southwestern Bell. Ben and Cora became members of the Texas Peace Makers travel group camping and traveling all over the United States. Many happy memories and lifetime friendships were made while seeing God’s beautiful country. He often spoke of and laughed about the many travels, escapades, and love for the Peace Makers.
Marthon was a very strong man of faith. He was an example of how to live a Godly life to his family and all who knew him. He was a giver and a doer and always taught his family to do the same. Pawpaw was a friend that everyone wanted to have because there was no problem or task too big or small that he would not take on with you. He was also the head Usher at his home church for many years. Even though he may have presented himself to the children as a stern man, he always had candy in his pockets and none of the children were afraid to ask for a piece. Dad was a man’s man, yet he was just a big warm Teddy Bear wrapped inside his large frame. Pawpaw had a great sense of humor that could bring tears of laughter to your eyes. Laughter and love were always flowing from him, and boy could he talk with those eyes!
PawPaw’s family was his life and MawMaw was his love! There was nothing he would not do to help any one of them. He often gave wise advice and was not afraid to help put you on the right path, but rest assured it always led to God. He loved listening to you and rejoiced with every victory or prayed and held your hand with every hardship. His family knew they could go to him with anything without judgement.
His desire was to be at home when he became ill in his later years and MawMaw worked tirelessly to make sure his wishes happened. Her love and devotion shined every day as she cared for him. Their family, friends and church family loved and supported them consistently during these years. This is a true testament of his life’s influence and love for others.
In his final days Dad was surrounded by family and friends as they sang and prayed with him. God heard their prayers and Dad met God at his desired destination, whole again on the morning of October 22, 2021.
