Creva Jewel Haugen (Slone) passed away on January 17, 2026. A daughter of the mountains of Appalachia, she was born on April 5, 1938, and was raised by her grandparents James Monroe Slone and Angeline (Lina Combs) Slone on a farm located on Smith Branch-Mallie Road, just southeast of Hindman in Knott County, Eastern Kentucky.
Her early years forged Creva into a woman of uncommon strength and spirit. She was fearless, never one to back down from a challenge, a true product of mountain character and determination. That fierce independence carried her from a roadside café near Hindman as a teenager, onward to Dayton, New York City, Los Angeles, and ultimately Arlington, Virginia, where her mother (Golda Slone) and half-siblings lived.
Creva worked at American University and Arlington Hospital, among other locations, as a data entry specialist before focusing on home and family with her husband Hal Haugen. She adored her family, often visiting the aunts and uncles she grew up with in Kentucky for long summer vacations, where her quick wit and spirited stories kept everyone entertained. Fiercely determined, wickedly comical, and unfailingly loyal, she was a cherished mother and friend who will be greatly missed. Hers was a life well lived.
She is survived by her husband Harold Alfred Haugen, son Harold Alfred Haugen Jr.; brothers James H. Moore of Clearwater, Florida, and Larry Moore of Front Royal, Virginia, and sister Patricia Shockey of Leesburg, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her sister Sarah R. Phillips of Clearwater, Florida.

The Twenty-Third Pslam
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
