He was 82 years old.
Ed was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Edward and Margaret (nee Ochrany), and moved to Harrisburg for his latter high school years. He attended St. Teresa's, North Catholic and Bishop McDevitt High Schools, and Villanova University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, Ed began working for the U.S. Department of Defense as a civilian. His forty-year career developing communications systems for the military and private industry took him around the country and abroad.
While working for the Navy in Washington, DC, he met Anne-Marie (nee Kelly). They married in 1969, settled in Arlington, Virginia, and raised four sons. As anyone who met him can attest, Ed’s sons, and later, his grandchildren, were his pride and joy. He supported them enthusiastically in many activities, including Scouts, high school band, and soccer and other sports.
Ed was himself an avid athlete even into his later years, which helped him battle colon, prostate, and finally, lung cancer. Ed was also known to many for his patriotism, his charity, his zeal for learning, his faith, and perhaps most of all, for his readiness to chat with nearly anyone. Ed is lovingly remembered by his wife, Anne-Marie, his sons, Colin (Melissa), Brendan, Kian (Laura), and Justin (Ellie), his grandchildren, Patrick, Katherine, Colman, Norah, Declan, Claire, Maeve, and Teresa, and his sister, Barbara Vankoski (James).
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on October 13, 2023 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia, followed by interment of ashes at Columbia Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church before Mass, from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
