Eleanor “Ellie” Ruth Levi was born April 22, 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was the older daughter of Philip and Lillian Levi. Her sister, Margery, was born five years later. Ellie was the aunt of Jamie Ables and her husband David and Great Aunt to their children, Lila and Jack. She graduated from Newton High School in 1957. Following graduation, Ellie attended Boston University majoring in education.
She moved to Cheshire, Connecticut and taught there for two years before moving to Virginia. She taught for the Alexandria school system for many years, predominantly at Mt. Vernon Elementary School for the rest of her career.
Ellie got her Masters Degree in Special Education from George Washington University. She leaves behind two dear friends, Kathleen McArdle and Jack Scales. While taking classes at GW, she met Kathleen and that friendship lasted over 55 years until Ellie died.
Ellie developed medical issues that caused her to retire early as well as giving up driving. She continued to read up on new treatments and tried many alternatives. Jack Scales was a wonderful companion. He brought her to appointments as well as family events, Jamie and David’s wedding in Florida, her parents anniversary party, an aunt and uncle’s anniversary party, high school reunions, as well as sightseeing journeys and out to eat.
She was a great teacher and committed to making sure her students succeeded.
Ellie had a great sense of fashion and would always be seen wearing bright red lipstick. She loved to listen to jazz, took a great interest in politics, followed sports teams and events, kept track of the market, and shopped on QVC.
After a period of declining health, Ellie passed away on Wednesday, December 3rd. Her wishes were that she be cremated and buried with her parents in the family plot in Sharon, Ma. She will missed by all those who knew her.
