Eugene D. Miller III Born in Chicago, IL on December 28, 1942 Parents; Eugene D Miller Jr and Annamae Douglas Miller Born the 2nd of 6 children (Terry, Joan, Raine, Don, Jer) In the early 60’s Gene’s interests included ownership of “Me & Gene’s”, a bar on the South Side of Chicago, and AHRA Drag Racing (US 30 dragstrip and the International Amphitheater in Chicago) where he held a couple of records in his class for several years. In 1966 Gene entered the United States Marine Corps initially attending Boot Camp in Camp Pendleton, CA, then later Officers Candidate School and Officers Basic Training in Quantico, VA graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant. In December 1967 he served in Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”, 3 Purple Heart Medals, 4 Vietnam Service Medals, and the National Defense Service Medal. Over the next 11 years Gene traveled much of the world with the Marine Corps to include Quantico, VA, Ft Meade, MD, Camp Butler, Okinawa, Camp Lejeune, NC (which included sea tours in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean), Buffalo, NY, and finally Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington DC. After departing the Marine Corps in 1979, he initially worked in private industry, but quickly returned to Federal Government service with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). After 3 years with FEMA, he again went into the restaurant business with ownership of Clarendon Station in Arlington, VA. It was during this time that he began making the countless friends that became such a big part of his life in later years. In 1989 he again returned to federal service working for the Department of Veterans Affairs in the Board of Veterans Appeals Office. In 2008 Gene retired for the last time after serving as the VA’s representative to the National Operation Center under Homeland Security. Since retiring Gene moved to Madeira Beach, FL and has spent a great deal of time traveling. Gene was a life member of the VFW (3150), DAV (VA-10), and Military Order of the Purple Heart, as well as a member of the American Legion (85), Sons of the American Legion (177), Fraternal Order of Police (NOVA 35), Elks (2188), Knights of Columbus (2473), Eagles (4147), Amvets (FL-8), Moose (2168) Fleet Reserve, Marine Corps League, and the Old Dominion Boat Club. Gene is survived by his best friend Bonnie Britten, sisters Joan (Don), Raine (Rich-deceased), and the late Terry McHale; Brothers Don (Maggie), and Jerry (Patricia); Godchildren Jim, Lyn, Christy and Amanda as well as numerous fantastic nieces, nephews and cousins. Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Arlington, VA, at 1:30 pm on October 16th, 2018. Following mass will be a viewing at Murphy’s Funeral Home in Arlington from 3-8pm. On Wednesday October 17th at 11:00 am, Gene will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
