George W. Miller Jr.

The Honorable George Wesley Miller, Jr., a former Washington trial attorney and judge with the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, passed away peacefully at his home in Falls Church, VA on Monday, June 27, 2016.

Born in Schenectady, NY on July 12, 1941, Judge Miller received his A.B. degree from Princeton University, magna cum laude, in 1963 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1966. Following a clerkship with the late Judge Bruce M. Forrester of the U.S. Tax Court, he served in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps at the Pentagon from 1967 to 1970, while earning an L.L.M. in taxation from George Washington University Law School in 1968. In 1970, he joined the law firm of Hogan & Hartson, now Hogan Lovells, in Washington, DC, where he practiced civil litigation for over 33 years before retiring from the partnership in 2003. While at Hogan & Hartson, he served as co-chair of the Legal Ethics Committee. In December 2003, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to a Judgeship with the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, DC, where he served until his retirement in 2014.

Judge Miller and Mary Katherine (Kay) Miller were married in Arlington, VA on July 31, 1971, and they lived in Arlington for over forty years. He was active in legal education as an adjunct professor for four semesters at George Mason University Law School and as a judge in moot court competitions at George Washington University Law School. He served on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals Board on Professional Responsibility from 1985 to 1991, including as its Chairman from 1989 to 1991.

Judge Miller is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kay Miller; sister Janet Hamilton and her husband William of Clifton Park, NY; daughter Angela Miller-Masters and her husband Marc of Washington, DC; son George Miller III of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; son William Miller and his wife Stephanie of Fort Worth, TX; and grandchildren Max and Miles Masters.

A Memorial Remembrance will be held at the Chapel at Goodwin House, Bailey's Crossroads, 3440 S. Jefferson Street, Falls Church, VA at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16th. A burial service will be held at a later date at Memory Gardens in Colonie, NY.
