After graduating from Atlantic Christian College, Hilda moved to Washington DC in the early 1950s and instantly fell in love with the city’s history, restaurants, shopping and high-tempo lifestyle. After working several short-term jobs, she found her career in 1955 when she joined the Federal Government to support Army officer career management at the Pentagon.
During the Vietnam War, she worked long days cutting orders for Infantry officers going to and returning from Vietnam. She loved the Infantry branch and got to know a number of “her” soldiers personally. There was some heartbreak but more often joy when they would return home and visit her at the office to thank her and share their stories. Of her many professional accomplishments, she valued this the most.
She retired from Federal service in 1995 to a happy life of gardening, long walks through her neighborhood, socializing with her neighbors, shopping for veggies and fruits at the local farmer’s market, caring for the local outdoor cat population, and trips to her beloved Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her warmth and humor touched everyone she met, and she will be dearly missed. Hilda is survived by her son Stephen of Springfield, VA.
She is preceded in death by her parents Henry Brice and Sallie Bridgers Brice, her brothers Everett, Vance, Glenn, Harrison, Sam and Harvey and her sisters Jean, Estelle, Margaret and Norma. A memorial service will be held August 16, 2025 from 12:30 to 4:30 at the Murphy Funeral Home located at 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22203.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to your favorite local animal rescue organization.
