Irene was born in Montgomery, WV on July, 15, 1931 to Thomas and Ruth (formerly Burford) Sawyer, who predeceased her. She subsequently worked for the United States Post Office Department and -- after marrying Raymond in 1974 and relocating to Washington, D.C. – she was a lending officer at the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, United States Department of Justice.

After retiring from the Department of Justice, Irene enjoyed travelling and attending the opera, the symphony, and the theater. She was a member of the Arlington Hospital Mall Walking Group.

For the past 30 years, she and Raymond have been parishioners of Holy Transfiguration Melkite Greek Catholic Church, 8501 Lewinsville Road, McLean, VA. A funeral service will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday September 9, with visitation and prayers beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA.

Dear Raymond:

I am very sorry for your loss of dear Irene. I got to know her working the Holy Transfiguration Food Festival for many years. We worked in the kitchen preparing food for the festival. It was a pleasure to work with her and she was pleasant to all those around her. May she rest in peace.

Sincerely,
Barbara Kfoury

Irene’s sense of humor and way of telling a personal story often had me laughing for days. I will miss her smile and her lovely voice when she sat near me at Sunday Liturgy. Rest In Peace, dear friend.

Ray, I’m sad for your devastating loss. You are in my prayers and I’m thankful for your love and devotion to Irene and the many happy memories that will be treasured as your heart heals. Irene was a beautiful soul with a terrific sense of humor and a fabulous laugh — just like her mother. Although we hadn’t seen each other for many years, we exchanged cards and notes. Her lovely cards were keepsakes. I was blessed to know her and proud to claim her half siblings as precious my first cousins.
