Jim was a proud and devoted grandfather to his two cherished grandchildren, Morgan and Hunter Walters.
Jim honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, enlisting on March 1, 1977. Over the course of his 20-year career, he was stationed at various bases throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area and in Greenland before retiring on March 31, 1997. His military service was a source of great pride for him and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James S. Walters and Beulah Amburgey Walters; his father- and mother-in-law, John Herbert and Catherine Mary Thompson; and his sisters, Sandy (Ralph) Napper, Teresa (Bill) Holbrook, and Jane Jonas.
In addition to his beloved wife of 42 years, Terry, Jim is survived by his children and grandchildren; his uncle, Warren Amburgey (Jean); his aunt, Evelyn Reynolds; his three sisters, Debera (Roger) Stapleton, Mary Milliken, and Lisa (Steve) Spangler; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Jim was an avid fan of the New York Mets and rarely missed a chance to cheer them on. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, and watching classic westerns. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA. Jim will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
