Kathleen Therese Long, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, 76, passed away in her home in Alexandria, Virginia on January 19th, 2022, after a valiant battle with cancer. She was married to Colonel John E. Long, (USAF), Ret.
Kathleen was born June 29, 1945 to Michael “Leo” and Agnes Flaherty in Green Bay Wisconsin, the fifth of eight children.
She earned her degree in Education at Saint Norbert College and went on to teach third grade in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Looking for warmer weather she transferred to Las Vegas Nevada to again teach third grade.
There Kathleen met then Air Force Captain John Long. They were married on June 5, 1971 at the Nellis AFB Chappell. Their 50 years of marriage gave them two sons, Kevin M Long, born January 5, 1974, and Ryan C Long, born June 25, 1975, and many wonderful memories.
She traveled the world with her fighter pilot husband, doing her part for her country in a capacity few people recognize or understand - Air Force wife. She embodied everything good about our country, delivering the best form of diplomacy to one person at a time. She allowed everyone to like America a little bit more, due to her grace, style, and charming demeanor. Along the way, she managed to raise two happy sons and create a home wherever the Air Force sent her family.
She loved traveling and visited a total of 75 countries, some many times. Living abroad in Bangkok, Thailand; Oxford, England; and Copenhagen, Denmark were some favorites times. Being part of the international community in Copenhagen was exciting. Kathleen’s talents were recognized as she served in several positions and was eventually elected President of the 200 member International Women’s Club.
After John retired from the Air Force, she earned her PhD in early childhood development which served her well when she joined teams auditing Head Start programs throughout the USA.
Kathleen and John opened a retail custom furniture business in Arlington in 2004. This adventure had many challenges but also great rewards when meeting the challenges. It gave her a deep appreciation for the entrepreneurial spirit that is the backbone of America.
She loved seeing her sons succeed in their chosen fields, getting married and having their own children. It brought great joy seeing her grand babies grow and learn.
She is predeceased by her parents, brothers Mike and John, and sisters Eileen and Ann. She is survived by sisters Mary, Ruth, and Jane; husband John; sons Kevin and Ryan, daughters-in- law Shannon and Erika; and four grandchildren Phoebe, Rigsby, Lucy, and Mary.
According to her wish, there will be a private Funeral Mass. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date set by the Cemetery.
